As usual there are a lot of things in the two lists above that I've never heard. I definitely give the thumbs-up to the first four entries on Pat's list (especially "Shiftwork"), possibly "I Am the Greatest" and, of course, "Watershed." I add the following: 1. Switched On -- Stereolab. I hope I have the year right. This is by far my favorite Stereolab. 2. Honey Steel's Gold -- Ed Kuepper. Not his strongest album but the strongest moments on it (such as the title track) are terrific. 3. West of Rome -- Vic Chesnutt. Even better than the first album. 4 Love Affair with Nature -- Cannanes, IF this is the right year for this record. I find the Cannanes' things a bit hard to pin down as to release date. I would love to add the Plug Uglies' rousing anthology just because the last song dates from 1991 (I think) but the collection wasn't released until just a couple of years ago. |

Randy, Switched On is a collection of their previous singles, right? My SPIN record guide shows it was released in 1992, althought the singles themselves were released before then I gather. I started my Stereolab collection with Peng! which was released after Switched on in 1992. I'll add Switched On to my short list. The Ed Kuepper also sounds interesting. Padraig, It was indeed me who bought that Chapterhouse album. I usually pull it out once a year during a weekend of shoegazer listening. Joe, 1991 was certainly one of the peak years for noise. What's Primal Scream - Screamadelica like? Speaking of my 1991 short list, it looks like I should invest in Massive Attack - Blue Lines. I do have their subsequent album Protection that featured the lovely voice of Tracey Thorn from EBTG fame. 1991 Trivia question: Which 1991 album was Number 1 on the college charts before being steamrolled by Nevermind? |

So, in my very humble opinion 1991 was a dreary, drab, dreadful year for music. Pickings are slim, but here goes, in no particular order: Magnetic Fields - Distant Plastic Trees The Fall - Shiftwork (a surprisingly not bad album) Pixies - Tromp le Monde (sometimes this is my favorite Pixies album. They went out on a high note for sure) Grant - Watershed (a pretty bad album, imo, save for the absolutely gorgeous Haunted House) Jack Frost - I haven't listened to this in nearly a decade, so I have no idea how I feel about this. Impressions have always been that this is just okay) American Music Club - Everclear (not even sure I'd like this anymore. Haven't heard it in at least 10 years. AMC's music hasn't stood up so well over time, for me. I think Mercury is their best) And yeah, Stereolab's Switched On was released in '92, as was their debut LP Peng. These will certainly both make appearances on my 1992 list. For what it's worth, my research for 1991 indicated that 1992 was a much better year in general. |

michael...screamadelica is great. they basically caught the tail of all the house craze, whilst retaining some of their retro roots and threw in some dub and more than a little gospel in there too. it's probably their most listable album from start to end....other than xtrmntr maybe. treat yourself! |

TROU, Teenage Fanclub was channeling Big Star big time on Bandwagonesque. 1991 sure was a huge year for grunge when you add 10, Badmotorfinger and Temple Of The Dog to Nevermind. Hard to believe it was over so quick, but even if Kurt was still alive I don't think it would have lasted much longer. I probably haven't listened to Tromp le Monde in 15 years. It's always Surfer Rosa and Dolittle that I pull out when I want to get a Pixies fix. I'll give it a spin this week. Spence, I have zippo Momus. What should I start with? |
