The thing is, Padraig wont have seen the letters page yet. Uncut probably doesnt hit the newsstands in Aus till at least a week after it comes out here and I got my subscription copy last Thursday. |

It is me! I'm glad they published it. My subscription copy hasn't arrived yet. Probably tomorrow. Can't wait now! Have they done away with his idiotic smoking picture? For everyone else's benefit, here's the letter I sent. I hope they haven't edited it. Ben Marshall's monthly interview column is usually at least moderately interesting, but I object to two aspects of it. First is the byline picture of him smoking. He obviously thinks this is a very cool thing to do, but he's a middle-aged man who can make up his own mind on his chances with lung cancer. The trouble is impressionable young people might also think it is cool (relating it to the fact that he gets to interview rock stars) and start smoking because of this. If you think I'm exaggerating then you know nothing about teenagers. Images such as this were exactly why I briefly smoked when I was a teenager. You may not have a lot of readers in their teens / early 20s, but to send those you have a message that smoking is glamorous is a disgrace. The second aspect of his column I object to is the pathetic question regarding a suitcase filled with £500m and a Chinese person dying if someone took it. Could you think of a less stupid / borderline racist way of phrasing a question on morality? I've bought every issue of Uncut for more than 10 years, often as a subscriber, so I imagine my views on the magazine should at least be considered. I'm sceptical that you will publish this letter - you very rarely publish anything critical of your writers - but I hope you will at least have the decency to forward it to Mr Marshall. If you continue to glamourise cigarettes I will soon become an ex-reader of Uncut. Pádraig Collins, Sydney, Australia |

Got to keep up his tough guy image. Is the stupid question about the Chinese person still there too? |

What about alcohol Padraig? I'd argue that of the legal drugs alcohol has a much more detrimental effect on society than fags... Didn't see the picture btw as I don't really read music mags. |

Nice one Pad, the Chinese question is effin pathetic. XY whilst I agree, I think Pad was right to get in and get out again and focus on the ciggies thing, esp given context, we could have had a debate, but its hard to debate in words. Its amazing the diff no fags at gigs has made, went to see Massive Attack prior to ban, came out like a pack of Gitanes and few months later same venue watched Turin Brakes came out and I smelt like on of my twin girls bum after a bath and talcum powder session! (well actually there;s no way I could smell that nice!) |

Uncut editor Allan Jones is always too keen to carp about his drug/boozing forays of the past & it's boring. There's not much chance of his photo being considered cool since he looks like an ugly lank-haired fat old woman! |

Cig pic and chinese question still there. What about all the pics inside especially ones from old festivals or feature story pics. Keith Richards with cig dangling from mouth with bottle of JD in hand. Or the stories of his or others drug taking. Pg 12 has Slash with a cig in 2 pics. Tattoos. Dylans kid Jeese going barefoot.Very impressionable. Dylan at a piano with cigs and ashtray on top. Full page ad for Jack Daniels pg 41. Young people are impressionable. That's fact. Rock n Roll is meant to leave an impression on you. Magazines are full of that stuff. A small thumnail pic of Ben Marshall with cig is hardly shocking and no more impressionable that the contents of the mag. The chinese question could be phrased better though. |

Jerry I laughed out loud at that! That's hilarious, the funniest commment I've read here in a very long time. And true too! Thanks for brightening up my evening. Lewisdhead, the fact is it's the same picture of the same guy smoking in every issue. I know these magazines are full of pictures of people smoking - I've been reading them for nearly 30 years. There's nothing you can do about old pictures - I'm not advocating airbrushing - but it's very easy to use a current picture where someone is not smoking. I stand by every word I wrote. Oh, I've just seen the magazine. They edited the letter slightly, but not by way of trying to distort what I said. |
