As some sort of cosmic consolation for being hit with the first (and worst) case of the flu I've had in some years I've just received two eagerly-awaited orders: the new Microdisney anthology and Domino's loving new reissue of the Triffids' first five seven-inch releases.

If Jeff were into the Triffids, this would be very much up his alley as you get--yes!--five seven-inch 45 rpm vinyl platters in faithful repros of their picture sleeves and with faithful repros of their original labels. All nicely pressed, I might add. Two of them are EPs, so this represents a total of 14 songs including an early version of "Place in the Sun."

Other than the YouTube-posted videos of "Bad Timing" and "Spanish Blue" I've not heard any pre-"Treeless Plain" recordings. The first single reflects McComb's career-long attraction to early-60s American rock sounds on the a-side "Stand Up" but the Triffids' sophistication as a band comes through on the (IMO) much better b-side "Farmers Never Visit Nightclubs." And the trademark tension between the dark Nick Caveish Triffids ("Twisted Brain") and the sweet pop ("Spanish Blue") shows up quite early.

Buyers of the set also get access to a download from Domino so that you get a digital version, which I very much appreciate because frankly that's the way I listen to music nowadays. Hopefully the download process is straightforward because I can be a little dense when it comes to things like that.

This sounds *really* cool. It'd be nice if something similar was done for the Go-Betweens. Like a package of all their pre-SMAL singles. Even something smaller, with just Lee Remick and People Say, would be nice, as those are the only 2 singles I don't actually own copies of (and wouldn't care if they were reissues).
