Nirvana

Not much chance, completely cut loose from purpose,
he was a young man riding a bus through North Carolina on the way to somewhere.
And it began to snow.

And the bus stopped at a little café in the hills and the passengers entered.
And he sat at the counter with the others, and he ordered, the food arrived.
And the meal was particularly good.
And the coffee.

The waitress was unlike the women he had known.
She was unaffected, and there was a natural humor which came from her.
And the fry cook said crazy things.
And the dishwasher in back laughed a good clean pleasant laugh.

And the young man watched the snow through the window.
And he wanted to stay in that café forever.
The curious feeling swam through him that everything was beautiful there.
And it would always stay beautiful there.

And then the bus driver told the passengers that it was time to board.
And the young man thought: "I'll just stay here, I'll just stay here."
And then he rose and he followed the others into the bus.
He found his seat and looked at the café through the window.
And then the bus moved off, down a curve, downward, out of the hills.

And the young man looked straight forward.
And he heard the other passengers speaking of other things,
or they were reading or trying to sleep.
And they hadn't noticed the magic.
And the young man put his head to one side,
closed his eyes, and pretended to sleep.

There was nothing else to do,
just to listen to the sound of the engine,
and the sound of the tires
in the snow.

Nice one Wilson. You've inspire'd me to take Hank down from the shelf and give him another read. My ex got me into him a few years ago - he wasn't such a bad guy really!!

That poem reminds me of an overnight bus journey from Byron Bay to Sydney on my travels last May.

We stopped at a truck-stop, and I instantly felt as if I'd walked into a scene from a movie - two salt-of-the-earth type women behind the counter, joking and flirting with the bus-driver, and a smart remark about all the regulars as they passed by. I took my coffee outside, to stretch my legs, and listen to the noise of what sounded like a million frogs in the swamp out back... As the bus pulled away, the last I saw was the two of them joking about, trying on all the hats from the display...

Catherine,

Here is a board that makes compelling reading...

Enjoy or something and goodnight from sweet England where the daffodils are starting to show in JANUARY.

Thanks for that link, Wilson. I've got a feeling I may lose a few hours in there over the next while!

It's quite possible those little daffs are showing their heads here in Ireland too, problem is, they're under 12" of water at the minute too!

We've had torrential rain here in Portishead, Somerset too, and snow on Friday. I'm a hardy Northerner but it frightens the life out of my West Country colleagues..

I'm listening to Tom again, A lovely piano based tune called "Home I've never been". It namechecks a town called Appalachicola, which Tom pronounces just beautifully. I wonder what will happen in that town tonight or tomorrow, can you get good coffee ? cold beer ?

I love being taken to these places by artists like Tom as I will probably never get the chance to travel beyond the furthest place I have already been which was still within Europe !

I love it when my favourite artists namecheck places as I can go on Google earth and "pin" them.

REM, Ron Sexsmith, Go-Betweens, Tom Waits, Tom's site is good for Topography. Maybe that would be a good thread. List the places named in songs ? Hmmm...
