....It's only taken me 35 years. Since seeing Bowie/Bolan et al on TOTP I dreamed of being up on stage with a guitar ("We leaped on stage though we couldn't play"), well on Thursday I am making my stage debut at an open mic night. There's a whole bunch of us from the "Intermediate" guitar class and we are taking over the bill for the night performing solo or duet. OH LORDY !! I am doing "I don't want to talk about it" and am singing too ! What AM I thinking ? ...Wish me luck or something. |

Good for you, Wilson. I run a monthly open mic here in Chicago and it's always a special treat for me to see someone perform for the first time. I could tell you to relax and enjoy yourself, but it's damn hard to do that your first time out, I know. So I'll just say don't psyche yourself out. There's really nothing to it. Just learn the tune, stay on the mic (that's a biggie) and let 'er rip. Be bold when you perform. You'll have a blast and I'm sure you'll do great! |

Thanks Rob, I'm comfortable with the guitar bit, it's singing out confidently that's going to be hard, I tend to sing "within" and it sound a bit like talking...I told the others it was a "Lou Reed thing" ....but I'm only fooling myself !! |

I think drink is the usual solution in this sort of case, isn't it? Loosens the vocal chords and the inhibitions... |

You are most certainly invited, Spence. Jeff, too. You guys'd definitely add some class to the event. It could use it, believe me! |

How did it go Wilson? Was it exhilerating? Rob, I saw your name in The Sydney Morning Herald the other day! Your namesake is the head of a Sydney theatre company. |

Aww thanks Guys ! It was sweaty palms a bit, but once up there it was less scary despite there being about 150 people. I was hoping it was going to be darker so as I wouldn't see the "sea of faces" thing, Anyways, I didn't lose my way with the actual song and even dared to sing the 2 bars accapella for the "blue for the tears...black for the nights fears" part. A boost to the confidence for my singing, No-one threw anything (that I saw !) and there was generous applause...I now need another song to do in 3 weeks time. It's probably going to be Knocking on heavens door as a) not many words b) even fewer chords and c) the crowd might help out with the singing ! I have lent 16LL to Claire in our group of players with the suggestion that we do "Streets". None of the group have heard of the GB's... blah blah blah. I don't know if anyone has heard of Burham on Sea where the Ritz Club is but it is the archetypal "seaside town they forgot to close down" and as I was pulling up to park on the promenade next to the venue the rain was lashing down and the amusement arcade lights were dancing and twinkling and on the car Radio was "Say mama" by Gene Vincent. I was fancifully thinking it was like being in a Morrissey video...and then, when I got inside, Tommo was warming up, unbelievably, by bashing out Marie's the name His latest flame (G G G Em Em). When I came out I noticed that some of the arcade lights were hanging down, the town had surrendered to the rain.... |

That's a lovely, lyrical description of the night Wilson. Glad to hear it went well. |

Padraig,Randy, Thank you for the kind words...our group tutor has also suggested the songwriting thing...seems a big step up to me but I am emboldened by your comments. |
