The Coral - Put the sun back The album this comes from, Roots and Echoes is absolutely fucki astonishing, I can't quite get over how damn good this is. Fireflies could be the new James Bond theme, echoes of Matt Monroe and Jimbo Morrison, John Barry too. Rebecca Beach, recalls Art lee god rest his soul, I can hear Crosby Stills etc, Neil, and James voice has a real Jim Morrison tone to it sometimes, James is a much undervalued classic singer. Jim Morrison had the voice of velvet, then he could rip ye appart like Grizzly Adams' grandpappy on a bear hunt! Yep I'm all American today. Well most days of late actually, now where's my green card!? |

Gene Clarke - In a misty morning 9first time I heard this was from the great Dave Graney) Also She don't care about time. I can't believe how great this is. I can see wher STipe gets his role model from on this one. Both songs are with me thanks to Randy. |

Steppin out queen - van morrison - incredibly crazed violin solo rips into the middle of this, wonderful - only the cheerful horns tootle back in a bit too soon, you can just hear the violin wailing away in the background with manic splendour. great vocal as well. |

"Red and black thats their color scheem". Yeah great group. I saw them once on a triple bill with the New York Dolls and Kiss. The singer of BOC was kind of a jerk, calling the audience a buncha "pussies". I always wondered what he thought of the NY Dolls. |

Blue Oyster Cult rocks. One of those seventies bands which weren't my favourite bands at that time, but well known. now some of those stillhave a place in my heart, whereas the most of my favourite bands from that time didn't 'survived'... |

Wow, nice to see a little BOC love here, Andreas. Now I'm dying to get home so I can put on Secret Treaties and Tyranny and Mutation - BOC's two best albums. Their riffage was just sick: Hot Rails to Hell, Dominance and Submission, Wings Whetted Down, etc... awesome stuff! |

Another BOC fan here...beyond (actually, intertwined with would be closer to it) the monster riffs was a sharp sense of humor, something the other leather-clad horror/mystico rockers either had contempt for or ignored altogether. And Don't Fear the Reaper has a great deal of wisdom to impart. |

Listening to the Jim Reeves song "The Blizzard," in which a fella and his horse make their way home through the title storm until he succumbs to snow madness and freezes to death 100 yards from the house. Put me in mind of other story songs...what are your favorites? They can be more concrete tales like "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" or maybe slightly more oblique, like "The Sound of Rain." What I can come up with (beyond those three) at this exact moment: "The Little Lady Preacher" and "Turn it On, Turn it On, Turn it On" - Tom T. Hall (actually he's got about million of 'em) "Lola" - Kinks (likewise) And many more to come... Lola - Kinks |

There are so many great story songs. I have to mention to pop gem "Bus Stop." Two Ian Tyson songs come to mind as well: "Rio Grande" and "Barney." Actually Tyson has dozen a zillion story songs. Thinking of Allen's mention of "Sound of Rain" I'm reminded of the Easybeats' brilliant murder song called "Peter." It was only recorded as a demo. |

April Fool Day's Morn is a kind of story I suppose, though like all of Loudon's mainly a slice of autobiography - beautiful and funny anyway. Meanwhile there's maybe a story in Jacksonville Skyline too, by Whiskeytown, but a lovely piece of early morning melancholy whatever. |

That is a fine, multifaceted tale indeed...and of course once one starts in on rap story songs one can go for quite awhile..."Fatal Attraction," "Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa," "My Fault,"... And speaking of grim tales of violence, more than half the songs on Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, an album that fascinated and freaked me out in about equal measure as a kid. |

Agree Allen, I just listened to that record a coupla days ago. Great story songs that still resonate with me, having been brought up ina house filled with Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins tunes till I was a teenager!! The old man could sing ALL the songs on Gunfighter Ballads and it was the same freaky fascination for me. |

Yeah, I grew up pretty country too, David. I actually remember first pulling that album out of my grandma's record collection when I was over there one day...and then weeks later surreptitiously sneaking it back to my house so I could play it when I wanted to. |
