I just saw this on the newly designed Lo-max site:

"They [the Go-Betweens] are currently writing songs for the next album which they will be recording in London with Mark Wallis throughout November 2004."

I must have missed this bit of information somewhere along the line. Lo-Max are planning to release it in April 2005. Nice to know they're currently working on another disc I'm sure I'll cherish. With Mark Wallis producing, who knows what it'll sound like. Anyone know what has he produced recently?

From the web:

Mark Wallis produced the recent Travis hit single ‘Coming Around’ (he also produced tracks on their now 7 x UK platinum Brit Award winning ‘The Man Who..’ album and mixed all the hits from their 1st album). Recently he produced an album for new universal signing Fur Patrol, tracks for Richard Ogden's new artist Tatiana and a wicked new album for classic punk band the Stranglers. Also Mark has produced Australian legend Paul Kelly for EMI and produced The Crockets for V2.

His production and mixing credits include: Travis, U2, The Go-Betweens, The Primitives, Iggy Pop & Debbie Harry, Michael Hutchence, Wet Wet Wet, The Smiths, Joan Armatrading etc

Thanks Bab's and James. I can't believe I forgot he did Paul Kelly's "Nothing But A Dream" album. That particular record sounds fantastic, though Wallis evidently still likes his reverb.

I wonder if they're recording at Mark Wallis' private studio (see the video interview at the above website). It seems unlikely that Robert and Grant would abandon their analogue ethic for Wallis' completely digital/protool environment (BYBO was put to two-inch analogue at Melbourne's Sing Sing studios, though they did make use of protools on that LP).

Praise the Lord....this means a tour (most likely!!) Treated myself to the reissues before xmas...outstanding; now I can adorn the wall of my own room with the vinyl covers.
Had Liberty Belle on my Walkman while I was running on the beach today; sun shining, fresh wind, listening to one of the GREATEST BANDS IN THE WORLD EVER...

'Oceans Apart'. Hmm, yet another reference to their differences in lifestyle?

Mojo has a news item regarding Oceans Apart, I'll try and recall all the song titles tomorrow but I recall that it mentioned songs called 'Darlinghurst Nights' and 'Here Comes The City' (which they previewed at the Barbican in London last year) I recall that Robert said that it's a real 'London' record in that it sounds 'organic'. Sorry for this half-remembered rubbish. I will get the exact quote in the next 24 hours.

Oceans Apart

Oceans apart and with only the blue between
Since we're apart
I'm yearning
I tell my heart
we must wait for another dawn
when he may be returning

How I regret the night he sailed for another shore
Will he come into sight to leave my arms no more?
I'll kiss him again
He'll know right from the very start
that we were never meant to be oceans apart

Oceans apart and with only the blue between us
Since we're apart
I'm yearning
I'll kiss him again
He'll know right from the very start
that we were never meant to be oceans apart.

Words and music by Mickey Rooney and Sidney Miller
Recorded for Decca by Judy Garland, 1939

I suppose it isn't likely that Robert would've covered the Judie Garland song

Ummmmm, there's a very nice promotional poster for Lee Remick 7" on ebay at the moment. (Incidently I'm not the seller). The asking starting bid is a meagre £200 GBP, but you can meditate over a nice scan of it for free: item number 3864940828. If there's anyone out there in the silk screen printing game, I reckon it could be reproduced for a lot less than that. Anyone notice that everything on ebay seems to have become a lot more expensive in the past 12 months?

The exact details, as per Mojo;
Oceans Apart
due in April
Production : Mark Wallis, plus tracks by The La's and Travis
Songs : Darlinghurst Nights, The Statue, Finding You, Here Comes The City
The Buzz : "It's a London record which means artificial plus organic. Sheen
and soil. Some songs will take your head off."Robert Forster.

Surely a typo re. production credits for Travis and The La's. Lee Mavers is/was notoriously studio-phobic. The less said about Travis the better.

However, it would appear that the Go-Betweens are developing a habit for over-stating the involvement of, er, 'big-names' on their records. I seem to recall Elliott Smith and Stephen Malkmus being listed among the musicians featured on TFORW when initial press-releases appeared.

Incorrect info in music papers almost always comes from inept music journos who couldn't get a job in the real world of journalism and haven't got the sense to correctly read the press release or even their own notes. Mark Wallis in the past has PRODUCED tracks by The La's and Travis, so it is not beyond the realms of possibilities that the prat who wrote the piece typed 'PLUS tracks' instead. As for the 'habit' of the Go-Betweens overstating the involvement of 'Big names' like Elliott Smith and Stephen Malkmus. The confusion could be the fact they had both recorded in the same studio (Jackpot) that TFORW was recorded. The journo probably didn't read the information correctly, suprise, suprise.

The promo poster was passed-in without a bid, so it seems not quite as sought after as the seller hoped.

Cichli Suite, if only! The title was chosen because that is the name of the pub they drank at near the studio they were recording the new album. Bob told me. Now someone should be able to locate the studio.

In case any of you bypass the news page on this site and go direct to the chat, Jonathan has just announced that the new album will be released on EMI in Australia and New Zealand. This will be the first time the Go-Bs have been in bed with a major label since 16LL so it'll be interesting to see how they benefit from this move on a local scale. No word yet on whether the EMI release will include the bonus disc.

And isn't it nice to see Robert celebrating being with a major by sporting a cravat on the new picture on the homepage? Shades of Peter Wyngarde. Good title for an album that.

In respect of the changing pictures, is there any chance of the site making all the photos from the shoot available?
