I've been studying at the University of Bradford in West Yorkshire since 2002 and I just noticed from the go-betweens.net gigography that the band played a very early gig there, in 1982, supporting the marvellous Orange Juice. Anyone who was there, out there? | ||

The band's gig at the Manhattan Club in Bradford the following year (11/4/83) was released on video in the mid-80s. Not sure if it was an official release. Has anybody seen it? | ||

Well, to answer the question about it being an official release; I bought my copy of the Manhattan Club show in the Virgin Megastore about 11 years ago. I'd be surprised if the band had authorised it's release as it really is a poor quality recording mainly due to it being recorded on a single, slightly unsteady camera. That said, the band sound good. There's a backdrop of some old Bruce Lee movie which is particularly impressive during an excellent rendition of 'Cattle and Cane'. | ||

Yes I have a copy of the Video "That Way". It features the Forster-McLennan-Vickers-Morrison line-up. It's shot on grainy 16mm but I think it captures the moment really well. The tracklisting is as follows: Hammer The Hammer Before Hollywood A Bad Debt Follows You As Long As That By Chance Two Steps, Step Out Your Turn, My Turn Cattle And Cane Ask That Way It seems to me like the video was shot by a fan, it has a very budget feel and you can hear a lot noise and discussions in the crowd. I think the blurb on the back of the video box sums it up well (although it is now outdated) "The Go-Betweens made many friends during their ten years plus as a band. This simple recording of an early gig in a Northern club has special charm, and is left as a document to the bands strength and character" | ||

The GoBs were always annoyed about Very Quick on the Eye, the so-called 'bootleg'. I wonder why they were never publicly very annoyed about this, so obviously a bootleg, which has appeared in a number of incarnations over the years. I would love to know its genesis. | ||

Correction. Its genesis is pretty obvious - someone had a video camera and went to a GoBs show. I would love to know its history since that time, particularly how it got to be distributed so far and wide around the world. And I wonder who made money out of it. | ||

The Visionary video label put it out originally and still do I believe. Their stock in trade was bad 80s punk and *cough* psychobilly, so a lot of their live vids are of "fan" quality. They later moved to 2 camera set ups and proper desk sound recording. As for permission, I have no idea. Their vids of shows by the Birthday Party, The Fall, Black Flag, the Gun Club, Milkshakes & Headcoats have all been widely distributed (and still are), and all of them are approximately of the same quality (some video, some 16 mm). http://www.visionary.co.uk/ | ||

The gigography also says they played at Keele University in November 1982 supporting Aztec Camera, but they didn't, and I had to go down to London to see them at the Ace. | ||

The video was clearly approved of by the band...just take a look at Lindy smiling directly into the camera many times. I see Robert noticing the camera-person quite a few times with deep stares. I assume it may have been someone from the record label or a very close friend of the band recording the show. I'm sure Lindy would know. | ||

Well, that's a good point. So perhaps it was sanctioned. There's nothing about the way it has been packaged or marketed that suggests official status. Perhaps being videoed was such a novelty then that people didn't think through all the consequences, just enjoyed being captured for posterity. | ||

It's quite a headache rendering video compared to something like Tallulah-era Gobs on Rock Arena, which I quite like. I remember buying 'That Way', sitting through about two songs and swiftly returned it back. I don't think it warranted a $50 au price tag. It would be nice to have a DVD collection of videos and live performances of the band. Surely something of the sort is in the pipeline. | ||

I am hoping for that release of the Barbican show. Please. I have "That Way." It's interesting. It emphasizes the fringe status of the band. Here they were doing these very individual songs in what seems to be a crappy little pub. |
