Was there ever at time when the Go-Betweens had to cancel concerts because of illnesses? Also, I heard that, midway through a concert in Sacremento, California, USA, Lindy Morrison fell offstage and sprained her ankle. Exactly when was that? | ||

Hi Brooke, the gig was in Berkley. I may have spelt that incorrectly. About five years ago some writer published his description of this horrible event. The description is very apt and used to be online although it was later published in a rock book. I was very drunk. My brothers' friends had taken me out before the gig. We sat on a bay drinking gin martinis. My first time drinking US martinis. Ah I thought I was sophisticated but those west coast guys got to me and I drank so many I was out of my head. As we say in Oz I had a few. Anyway I fell off the stage, no one would talk to me and sat crying backstage with my foot in the riders ice bucket. Nevertheless I continued on the tour. The roadies all thougfht they should play my parts (like hell). But I soldiered on and No one noticed at any of the gigs that there was no bass drum, that made my wounded ego feel better I can tell you. | ||

Hey Lindy, that show sounds like my performance at that university thing in Dublin. The sound guy just turned me off thank God. We did cancel a show in Bristol, I think. It was at the end of a tour of England. We all had the flu but I had it last. I made it through the London show by leaning against my amp but then the next day when we were driving west I was so sick you dropped me off at a hospital in the London suburbs and played the show without me. The final show of the tour was cancelled but we rescheduled and played it a couple of weeks later. | ||

Lovely to hear we were so compassionate in your time of need. I just remembered another, perhaps you can help Robert with time and place. Do you remember travelling up north England to a gig and when we arrived the huge church next to the gig was on fire, a blazing fiery building with tall spires. The promoter cancelled the show. We stood on the street watching the arrival of the fire trucks and talking to the audience who couldn't get in. I was awe struck by the fire and mistakenly told two punters that this was better than the gig and they were angry that I was so flippant about us not performing that night. | ||

At least you took me to the hospital... I do remember the show you're talking about. Liverpool I think but I'll check. It was an incredible sight. We watched it burn down, packed up and drove back to London. | ||

If I remember correctly McLennan started that fire. The man is a obvious candidate for a pyromaniac. In his lyrics; he's always singing about cans of gasoline, fires, and setting things alight. I remember an article in Melody Maker years ago when he described Def Leppard's Pyromania as his album of the year. That article appeared back around '84' I think. But if I'm wrong I'm sure somebody out there can correct me. | ||

I remember a show in Oxford on the Liberty Belle tour I think and Robert Vickers fell ill before the gig and went to hospital. The band played on with an accordion player I think (was that Dean B. Speedwell?)but no bass player. Good gig despite this - any of the band remember this? What happened to you Robert - too many sherbets? | ||

I think that's the gig I refer to earlier in the thread. And you are right that was the multi-talented Dean Speedwell who was playing with us. For Australian readers I will refrain from the obvious Sherbert joke. Ok I won't. Even one Daryl Braithwaite is too many. | ||

Didn't the band also fail to turn up once to a gig in Zurich? They were playing Europe with REM (which must have been that band's "Green" tour. Don't ask me for dates.). My ex-girlfriend turned up to see them (I mean the GBs) and had a tremendous battle with box office guy to get her money back. He couldn't believe she only wanted to see "the support". I remember reading later that the GBs had played a solo gig in France (?) and couldn't get to Zurich in time. Or the bus broke down. (Or it's all a figment of my imagination because I was so pleased she didn't get to see them with her new man. Ha! Someone else's wife, yeah.) | ||

At the recent Liverpool gig Grant said "its good to be back in Liverpool, last time we were here the church was on fire". So it Liverpool I think. What year would that be then? And if Lindy or Robert are reading this where did you stay when you gigged in Liverpool? I posted a thread called "Rock 'n'Roll hotels" that sparked zero interest but I'm curious to know! | ||

I once got emails from 2 Mansun fans in Bolivia or somewhere who were obsessed with Paul Draper. I tried to kid them a long that I was their hero but they knew every aspect of this guys life and no matter how much I checked up on the mansun website they sussed me out after about a week. I was glad to get caught out 'cus being a rock god is hard work, even the real Paul Draper would of struggled with some of their questions! So Iam Paul Draper but not that Paul Draper. | ||

I too was at the Oxford gig when Robert Vickers was ill. I remember they played on with no bass player, but can't remember an accordion player. I thought they played it as a three piece. At least that's what I've been telling people for years. Whatever, it was still a brilliant gig. I got there pretty early, and the band were wandering about on grassland outside. Perhaps they were taking in some fresh air and trying to shake off the flu. | ||
