I'm glad you asked, Stingray! The Go-betweens were always Robert Forster (guitar and vocals) and Grant McClennan (guitar, bass and vocals). But over the years it occasionally included Bruce Anton, Tim Mustapha, Steve Daly and Lindy Morrison (drums), Robert Vickers (bass and vocals), Amanda Brown (violin, oboe, guitar, mandolin, keyboards and vocals), John Willsteed (bass, keyboards, guitar and vocals) and Martin Armiger (bass). Hope that answers your question! |

WHOOPS!! It was Michael Armiger who was the Go-betweens' last bassist, and not Martin, his brother, as I previously quoted. My apologies for this mistake and any inconvenience. |

I wouldn't agree with you there, Spring Rain. This is tricky question - as someone who bought 'Send me a lullaby' when it first came out, I've always considered the Go-Betweens to be a combination of Robert, Grant, Lindy, Robert V and Amanda Brown. Ok, Robert and Grant were esentially a duo in the beginning. But it was only with these people that they defined their sound and style. Furthermore, its clear from discussions posted here that Lindy and Robert Vickers made important contributions to the Go-Betweens sound that I grew to love. Without them, I don't think I would be still be a fan today. For example, when I bought 'Send me a lullaby' the inclusion of that drum solo on 'eight pictures' was the thing that caught my imagination. I don't buy into the notion that the 'Go-Betweens' is a sort of floating concept held solely by Robert and Grant and whoever they choose to invite on board. For me, this is akin to saying the Beatles were John, Paul, George, Ringo, Stu Sutcliffe and Pete Best. |

Don't forget George Martin who was the 7th Beatle. |

Jerry, I left out Tony Sheridan who played with them in Hamburg. That would make George Martin Beatle number 8. |

Spot on, Donat. Billy played on 'Let it be' and on their final rooftop concert. So that's John, Paul, George, Ringo, Stu, Pete, Billy and George Martin - the 9th Beatle. Anymore members and we'll be into Polyphonic Spree territory. |

Did Tony Sheridan actually 'play' with the Beatles? I thought they simply turned up at a recording studio to back him up on 'My Bonnie'. I guess that means they 'played' with him, but it's a huge stretch to make him a member of the Beatles. I know... you were only joking. Who was that drummer who replaced Ringo when he was ill??? |

A session drummer by the name of Jimmy Nichol. see Jimmy Nichol replaces Ringo Also, in Beatles, Blokker, Holland 1964 George says he doesn't consider their work with Tony Sheridan to be a really representative of the Beatles. So do we subtract Tony and substitute Jimmy Nichol for the final Polyphonic Beatles line-up? Only joking. This could go on for pages. I'm happy to stick with the fab four for the Beatles. The Go-Betweens question is still a bit tricky because Glen and Adele must pretty much be considered Go-Betweens by now. I guess I consider the line-up of the Go-Betweens mach 1 to be crucial because it was with this lineup that the GBs earned their reputation, a reputation they have been able to build upon with the new band. Enough said about this. On the subject of the Polyphonic Spree, is there something there that I'm not getting? I just can't fathom going to see a band that looks like a cross between a Moonie wedding and the cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Joseph and his amazing technicolour dreamcoat'! Apologies in advance to any Moonies offended by the Lloyd Webber reference. |

Stingray, You are being very coy! You wouldn't happen to be one Alec Palao - of the psychobilly band 'The StingRays', who according to this page - The StingRays -played with the Go-Betweens! Under what circumstances did you (or Alec) play in the Go-Betweens? |

Shouldn't Peter Milton Walsh be in the temporary GoBs' pantheon? |

Randy, he should. He was an official member for a short stretch of time, less than a year, i think. |

Randy and Jeff, you are both WRONG!!! Peter should NEVER stay with the Go-betweens at all!! I don't quite know what his role in the group was at the time, but the band should stay the way it was, with Amanda and Lindy, and either John (for Oz tours) ar Robert V (for American tours). Grant and Robert F MUST bury the hatchet somehow!!! |

spring rain, i think you are misunderstanding what we said. or at least what i was trying to convey, i can't speak for randy. i was saying that mr. walsh shouldn't be forgotten as having once been a member of the go-betweens, that's all. we were listing previous go-betweens members, afterall, and until randy, no one had mentioned peter walsh. we're not talking about the present at all here. but yeah, ultimately, i think we'd all agree that the band would be much better off with robert vickers and lindy back in the line-up, but i'd say that's about as likely to happen as a full beatles reunion. ;) but then i also think grant needs to stop being afraid to play guitar like he used to, like those weak-in-the-knees beautiful guitar melodies that used to grace songs like part company, unkind and unwise, rare breed, etc... |

God, I love "Part Company!" It always seems that everybody simply ignores "Spring Hill Fair." I agree that it would nice to hear the Grant-discovering-guitar-instead-of-bass sound again. I certainly wasn't suggesting that Peter Milton Walsh should be part of a GoBees' reunion. He's too good to be sitting in the background playing guitar. I wish he'd do a Peter Milton Walsh reunion. "Fete Foraine" sits up there in my personal pantheon of perfect musical moments. (sorry about the alliteration.) |

As Peter Milton Walsh once said about his involvement in the Go-Betweens: "It's a vanished world- I have no sentiment". There seems to be a grey area regarding Walsh's Go-Betweens membership. Sketchy history dictates that he may have only played once onstage with the band and that he was with the Go-Betweens and the Supports on a tour of North Queensland but it's unsure as to whether or not he played. I'm pretty sure David's lovely book explains this better than I. Of course, there were the two recordings "I want to be Today" & "The Sound of Rain". If the 1978-1990 liner list of members acts as a yard stick, it states that GM and RF were the only members of the band until Lindy joined in '80 and that Armiger was not an official member either. Had the Beserkley (sic?) deal not gone to the cleaners and they became stars of the label, then perhaps Walsh might have stayed a little longer for the fame/fortune it might have offered. For me personally, I'm glad he left, otherwise there wouldn't have been the Apartments (even though the band existed prior to him joining the GOBS) or Out of Nowhere, two of my top five Oz bands easily. Lyrically and musically, it seemed to me like he was far ahead of RF at that time, so why would he have just stayed in the shadow of someone elses band when he could have easily gone off and done his own thing? Perhaps a Peter Milton Walsh reunion is in order? There's a myth along the lines of there being a cache of fully realised albums sitting in a shoebox at his place. He has in the past performed songs in concert that have never appeared on record 'Calling on Jean', 'Never be Blue' etc. If there is never to be any new material, then at least Hot records should look into these phantom records. Good to see some fellow Apartments fans in here. |
