so, according to pitchfork: http://pitchforkmedia.com/news/05-02/23.shtml#story3 the new go-betweens album won't be released stateside by jetset, but instead by yep roc records. i wonder why jetset won't be handling this. and, quite maddeningly, there's no sign of a US tour in the works. i hope this avoidance of the US doesn't become the norm, as that would really upset a pretty sizeable portion of their fanbase. we've talked this subject to death in the past, so i don't necessarily want to open up that "why the go-betweens won't or shouldn't tour the US" can of worms again. but still, has anyone with some actual knowledge of the band's motives have any idea why a US tour may not happen? or if there are plans for something later in the year? if they were to avoid the US *again*, i think i'd start to actually feel betrayed in some strange way! | ||

Well, I’m sure Robert Vickers could shed some light on Yep Rock versus Jetset, but only in as much as it’s anybody’s business outside the band and label(s). Yep Rock has had a higher profile lately harboring such artists as Robyn Hitchcock, Nick Lowe, Southern Culture on the Skids, Dave Alvin, The Fleshtones and Chris Stamey… the label seems to get the discs into the stores. I can only assume that the cost of touring in the US precludes the Go-Betweens making a profit of any kind… a net loss is more likely. It’s been a few years now and I would love to see them again. The last time they were here they headlined a Jetset CMJ night at The Bowery Ballroom as a four-piece, opened for Yo La Tengo at the same venue a few months later as a trio and headlined at The Knitting Factory a few weeks after that. The KF show was well attended, but I don't think it was sold out (and it’s not a very big room). It was a fantastic show, however. Here’s hoping that the group’s absence will make the hearts of their fans grow fonder, allowing them to play higher profile gigs at larger venues upon their long-awaited return. | ||

looking at it more closely, that tour schedule can't be complete. i mean, practically half the dates are in germany, with nothing in france and ireland, which is definitely odd. | ||

There generally seems to be more silence from the band this time around regarding the album, tour, plans for the year etc too. Not sure why this is - anyone else get the same impression? I hope they don't just release the album, play 20 or 30 shows and then stop again. | ||

Maybe the Sadies can open for them? They are another Yep Roc act, from Toronto. They have a sound that reminds me of The Byrds. Robyn Hitchcock is even on one cut of their latest, Favourite Colours. | ||

Jetset is on what you might call hiatus. They should be back later in the year. I left there in November to start my own PR company. If Yep Rock put up the cash I would think the band would do some kind of US tour. Probably just a few major cities. There's really not much point in playing the smaller markets anymore. Robert's got small children, I'm sure he'd much rather be with them than in Baltimore losing money. | ||

Good thing I don't live in Baltimore! Well, hopefully they'll hit San Francisco. I'm dying to see them in their full electric glory, unlike the last two times they came, sans drummer. | ||

I live north of Detroit, and don't expect them to tour stop in Michigan. If they tour stop in Chicago, I'll be doing the road trip to the windy city. | ||

I ran into a club booker last night at the final Luna show and he said the GBs are likely to play the Mercury Lounge and Maxwells in June. I'm sure they'll do SF as it's their best market. Chicago would be a possibility but it's hard to tell at this point. |
