Is there any word on a Dublin gig yet? I'm think maybe I should book a ticket for Shepherds Bush, just in case.

I've not posted in ages, and it's been months since I've had a look in. They tell you nothing on the Radio! I didn't even know the new Album was on it's way, never mind a tour.

I've only had a quick glance today, but nice to see all the familiar heads still here. I've got some major catching up to do...

Hi Catherine,

Good to hear you are still around.

According to some discussion in another thread, the GBS appear to be playing where they've had good album sales. Makes sense, I suppose.

I've always considered Ireland to be a stonghold for them but I wonder whether that actually translates into sales? Anyone know where we could find out that information?

Certainly, the gigs they've played there always seem packed with wildly enthusiastic punters - but maybe that's just my go-be-centric view of things.

Anyway, I've booked to see them in Munich which is the nearest place to where I'm currently living.

Hi Cichli,
I would have thought so too. I think I'll book Shepherd's bush. And if they add a Dublin show, I'll go there too!

The Go-Betweens do sell well in Ireland (Robert told me so a few years ago), though obviously not well enough to trouble the chart compilers. It's not like they make the playlist on 98FM (when I worked there as a sports reporter I used to get lots of good CDs because they were never going to play them and did not hang onto them because of lack of space).

I realise that "the kids" probably listen to something other than 98FM now, but I've not lived in Dublin since 2002. Donal Dineen will always play The Go-Betweens anyway.

To all based on the mainland, don't forget they're playing other British venues too! Admittedly, the ones earlier in the week are probably problematic, but I'm off to the Birmingham one! Ryanair and Aer Lingus fly do the Dublin - B'ham International route; Aer Aerann serve B'ham from Cork and Galway; etc. Try http://www.skyscanner.net/ for flights from whatever airport on the mainland.

I'm going to Shepherd's bush! I decided not to wait and see if there would be a Dublin Show announced. All is booked. I'm probably paying waaaaayyy over the odds for a hotel the far side of the city, but to hell with it. I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms for some live go-be action!!! Hope I don't get lost. Have never found a reason to visit the city before. Advice please, on a decent pub nearby for before-the-show pints of half decent guinness!

You'll be glad to know, Padraig, that Donal Dineen is still doing his little bit for the Go-Betweens, as is Tom Dunne. "No Disco" in the Donal years was always guaranteed to feature a track at least every couple of weeks.

Actually Donal is getting a lot more "experimental" with the after midnight hours of his programme of late. Travelling home from a gig last night, I tuned in to a strange free-form jazz set, which seemed to go on forever. Fine in it's place, but not when you're trying to drive on an icy road, and you're already on the verge of sleep!!

I would have thought that some atonal jazz would have helped keep you awake Catherine!

So that's where all that shitty Fosters beer goes. They're selling it to the Poms. Why not, no-one drinks it here.

I'm holding out for 2 Whelan's shows May 6th and 7th..dreaming of course.. hope they'll be over after their jaunt around Europe. Their warm up show before the Barbican in Vicar St was all seated and far from full. Am travelling to London for the first time in a few weeks to see Arsenal at highbury before it's torn down, any recommendations on best areas to stay for a good night out?

Probably one of the Outback chain, I'm guessing.

Hmmm Fosters... not sure about that.. I'm sure they'll have something I can drink which doesn't look and taste like wee, or maybe they don't let Sheilas in...

For the Shepherds Bush Empire, the Bush Ranger on Goldhawk Road is a really good pub - think it is part Irish (like most of Shepherds Bush) so you'll feel at home, definitely better beer than that Aussie cattleshed on the green. Reasonable grub as well if I remember right.

As for after seeing the Goners at Highbury, lots of good boozers in Upper Street, Islington.

Be warned - the Bush Ranger underwent a makeover last year which removed all atmosphere. But it's probably still the best of a bad bunch around the Empire.

It's right next to Goldhawk Road underground station, about a five minute walk from the Empire.

Queen's Park Rangers' last home match of the season is two weeks before the gig, so it should be relatively quiet in the Bush Ranger.

So it's an aussie-with-an-Irish-granny themed pub then?

I'm holding out in the hope they finally play Belfast. After all, we had REM last week for their first ever visit - Stipe was positively raving about the crowd by the end of the set.
