you'd think it would have been mentioned a lot, but not really. at least not here so much. i LOVE felt about as much as the go-betweens, and have always noted the similarities: the gorgeously melodic lead guitar melodies, the moody, catchy chord changes, inventive approaches to the pop form, etc... sure, there are *plenty* of differences, but it's hard for me to imagine someone liking one band while not being into the other. | ||

...and both having singers largely inspired by Mr Tom Verlaine ;) I don't rate Felt as high as the Go-Betweens, but they were a great band. "Primitive Painters" is a stunning piece of music and Hayward's titles always intrigued me as much as Morrissey's. | ||

I've hit up Amazon for an anthology "Absolute Classic Masterpieces." This will be interesting. The Fall is one of my long-time favorite bands and anybody who is accused of being influenced by them AND Velvet Underground AND cited by Jeff on here as having a GoBees-like musicality promises a good listen. | ||

Felt were a wonderful band. American band The Tyde have taken much of their sound and released two great lps- Once and Twice, well worth hearing. | ||

Stuart Maconie played a Felt track on his BBC Radio 6 Freak Zone show last night and it took me back. Felt always reminded me a bit of the Durruti Column - same sort of echoey guitar noise. | ||

For those of you above who haven't heard Felt, I'd highly recommend "Strange Idols Pattern" and "Forever Breathes the Lonely Word" as perfect albums to start with. "Ignite the Seven Cannons" is fabulous too, but it was produced rather heavy-handedly by Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrie, and as a result, sounds a lot like a Cocteau Twins record, and some people really don't like that. I don't mind though, and think it's a great album. Absolute Classic Masterpieces is a great comp for neophytes, but only if it's the first one and not Vol. 2. Their first two albums, "Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty" and "Splendour of Fear," are less poppy, and very heavy on the atmosphere, with minimal arrangements but long, dreamy, sometimes kind of eerie (but usually quite pretty) instrumental passages. The song "The World as Soft as Lace" is one of my favorite songs *ever* by anyone. "Me and Monkey on the Moon," their last album, is nice, and is infused with a fair amount of Dylan and general 60s stylistic references (as was much of their late-80s work), and would probably appeal to a lot of people around here. Amazing band. smh - the first thing I thought of when I heard the Tyde was that they *had* to have spent a lot of time listening to late 80s Felt records. I wasn't quite as into them, but definitely saw where they were coming from. | ||

Two quick listens to "Absolute Classic Masterpieces" and I think this is a band I will be getting into. I was very intense about the Cocteau Twins back in the mid 80s but haven't listened to them for years (not since I found out how bad they are on stage). But it was a pleasant surprise hearing Elizabeth Fraser's voice on "Primitive Painters." Anybody who sounds like Lou Reed or, more accurately, Glenn Mercer of the Feelies, is going to get my vote. | ||

WOW. You guys have taste! There is no other band from the 80's that even compared to the GB's except these guys. And they were on a totally different wavelength. Let me just say... I own every solitary recording from Lawrence and Co. Even have the Maurice Deebank solo cd and MANY live shows which I feel priveliged to own!The "Declaration" dvd is a disappointment to us fans, but if that's all that exists so be it.. TO ALL MEMBERS: If you are not discovering FELT then you are shortchanging yourselves! It's utterly beautiful stuff. I enjoy the compilation "Bubblegum Perfume". And the best thing the band EVER released is "The Strange Idols Pattern". If you can't find it, drop a line. It's unbelievable! | ||

Four listens to "Absolute Classic Masterpieces" now. Deebank is incredible. Instrumental or vocal, most of the tracks on this thing are like a spike stuck in my vein. Many thanks to everybody on here who brought this group up. |
