C'mon Mr. Allen - you don't actually like their music - you just admire their glorious, luxurious, flowing moustaches!

Real Animal - Alejandro Escovedo.

It's understandable, man. Their 'staches made even Sam Elliott weep with envy...

Real Animal is a cracker alright ETM. I got it partly on your say so, but also because I'm a fan since seeing him live on St Patrick's day, 2001 in Austin, TX.

Glad to have had anything to do with that decision, PC - it is indeed a corker of a record. Here's a nice piece on Mr. Escovedo, featuring a link to a great vid of him doing "Always a Friend" with a certain Mr. Springsteen (apologies to the haters): http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/new s/music/la-et-alejandro9-2008sep09,0,272 6291.story

I remember buying Three Dog Night - Suitable For Framing, on vinyl way back in September of 1969! A month or two later I discovered free form FM radio, Fleetwood Mac, Traffic, John Mayall, Blind Faith, Jimi Hendrix, etc.

Speaking of Sam Elliott, a 10th Anniversary Big Lebowski DVD is being released this month, it comes in a minature bowling ball case!

Over the years I've come to enjoy TDN's best-of but wasn't interested in venturing beyond that. At the very least they did do some solids in the departments of exposure and royalties for folks like Nilsson, Newman and Hiatt.

Stump - Charlton Heston. Stump is the band btw, not a previously unheard classic track from Mr NRA.

Stump were Irish and, like many other bands from Cork, a little weird. OK, a lot weird. There's a bit of PIL there, though not in Charlton Heston, which is about the bible (sort of) and features a great line
"Lights, camel, action"
and a genius chorus
"Charlton Heston
put his vest on"

Padraig, I have Stump - A Fierce Pancake, on cd that I bought close to 20 years ago.

Speaking of 20 years ago, November will mark my 20th year anniversary of being a G-B's fan. Mucho thanks to the sadly missed Dimension radio program on WDET, which played "Love Is A Sign" on a Sunday night in November of 1988. I still have my cassette of that nights show!

Crawling from the Wreckage - Rockpile

Live version on the Seconds of Pleasure reissue, originally from the Concerts for Kampuchea album, where the cream of Brit punk/new wave/ska revival showed up some of their forebears.

Breakthrough - Richard Wright

A very beautiful song sung by Sinead o'Connor on RW's Broken China solo album, and which is also featured in a great swinging-chorus version on David Gilmour's Meltdown concert DVD.

I always had a soft spot for this discreet but talented musician, who often seemed to get pushed to the sidelines by the mammoth Roger Water ego and Gilmour's barnstorming guitar playing.

RIP, Mr Wright.

Stuart, that Sinead o'Connor sure has a set of pipes on her. She also did a nice guest vocal on Phil Coulter's Lake of Shadows album on the song "Shores of The Swilley".

As far as the Wright, Waters, Mason and Gilmour PF line-up, I lost interest in the albums that came after Wish You Were Here. They sure had a nice run though starting with Meddle, DSOTM and WYWH when Mr. Wright was featured more in the songs. I can't remember the last time I sat down and listened to The Wall, and I never bought any of the late 80's albums.

The Wall was a pretty wretched affair I thought, but I have to say I enjoyed the Division Bell - some great clanging tunes and some enjoyable "Fie at thee Waters, we still exist" sort of lyrics. The Meltdown concert mentioned above is an unplugged affair with some nice covers - Dimming of the day for instance - a strong Sam Brown-led choir and, fundamentally, a foxy cellist. I do have a weakness for a foxy cellist.

Bop Gun (One Nation) - George Clinton

The version on Greatest Funkin' Hits, featuring Ice Cube, who, due to the infusion of P-Funk, actually sounds warm and playful. The funk performs miracles...
