Surprised that no one else started a thread...Man, is this a shock! I always thought Paul could go into stand-up comedy if the music gig wasn't working out. Anybody else die-hard Enz/CH fans? Just want to hear what everyone else thinks. Will |

Too shocked to write anything much William. I played Six Months In A Leaky Boat after reading the news on the web as it's the only Enz/CH track I have mp3'd. I know he did not play on that song though. |

Very saddened by this news, even though I'm not much of a Crowded House or Split Enz fan. William, I thought he did sort of have a go at comedy: remember his TV show "Hessie's Shed"? I'm not being facetious in saying that. He certainly had a jocular sense of humour that didn't really sit well with me when I watched the program, though I have nothing but respect for his musicality. |

So very, very sad. Rest in peace, Paul. |

I just got home from a holiday in New Zealand and while I was there picked up a biog of Crowded House so it came as a horrible and massive shock to read that Paul Hester had taken his own life. I can't quite believe it actually. |

I went to the Royal Albert Hall Finn Brothers concert last night. I had been out for most of that day so I hadn't heard the news. I have only just found this out via this board. Last night Tim Finn mentioned that it had been a "very very strange day" towards the end of the gig. Also, Neil introduced a song (I wish I could remember which one) saying that nobody could play it as well as Paul Hester. At the end of the gig the band (including "guest" Nick Seymour) got a standing ovation. I'm sure last night and the preceeding shows this week will be a fitting tribute. |

Wonder why he topped himself ? Did they sort him out ok with the publishing ? Drummers often dont make the kind of money the songwriters do ? That can be depressing .Its really sad , cos he was quite a quirky person.Lots of character. |

Peter I agree with you, I wasn't a huge Hester fan when he was clowning about. But musically he did have a big hand in the dynamic of CH... and when that was good it was very good. Was at a Finn Bros. gig in Bradford a few months ago and Neil and Tim were chatting with the audience abt Paul, I got the feeling this public reminiscing happened regularly. Apparently the last CH gig in Bradford at this venue had featured Paul climbing up to a balcony to share a beer with a punter. You can see why people loved him. Potatoe, he was having some relationship troubles apparently, leading to depression. Although people close to him have said that they had no idea that he was depressed. He had a longterm girlfriend in Melbourne although they'd been broken up for a while; they had two little girls. I think it was a new woman he was having grief with. It's awful really. |
