Wow. I'm surprised by the inclusion of the Smiths and the absence of any Dylan albums. I seem to recall a list of Robert's top three albums posted on Sean Brady's website some time back that included the Guy Clark album, Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" and another I don't recall. I always thought Forster disliked the Smiths considering his remarks about their popularity in Nichols's book and because they were basically dropped from Rough Trade so Geoff Travis could pour his money into a sure thing. Therefore, I was equally surprised--as I am now--that he programmed Morrissey's "The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get" for Rage in '95 (which I saw just recently). A note on Dylan albums: while I consider myself a huge Dylan fan, I'd probably say he is my favourite artist, I don't think I'd put any of his albums in my top ten either. However, I believe that if I had to be deprived of all but one band or performer in my record collection I could happily live with the great man's work alone. Go figure. I probably return to his album's more than anybody elses and perhaps this is because they are imperfect. |

Actually, Forster has sung the praises of the Smiths in interviews before (emphasizing a fondness for "Queen is Dead"). Which isn't surprising at all given the stylistic similarities (eg - emphasis on melodic, ringing guitars, etc..) between 80s Go-Betweens and the Smiths. I remember reading something he said once that implied he was a bit jealous of the Smiths' massive popularity. Interestingly, I've also read that Morrissey was a Go-Betweens fan. |

But everyone knows that the best Smiths album is 'Strangeways, here we come'! 'At the record company meeting, on their hands a dead star' is the best opening line i've heard to a song. For me their first 3 albums haven't aged too well but 'Strangeways...' sounds fresher than ever. |

Yeah, I love Strangeways too. A lot. Never understood why it always seemed to get the shaft. It's a beautiful, mature work, but criminally underrated. |

Didn't the Go-betweens do a cover of a Smiths song on 16 Lovers' Lane. Not sure of the exact title - maybe, "You can't say no forever" or something like that. |

They did, but in fact "Was There Anything I Could Do" bettered "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others". BTW of which Smiths song is "You Can't Say No Forever" reminiscent? The melody of the chorus is a bit like "Shoplifters Of The World Unite" maybe, but I'm looking for something clearer. |

Dear Kuba, In this post structural age, one speaks figuratively rather than literally. I'm not sure I can help you if you're "looking for something clearer". |

Perhaps FSH is a little uncomfortable in his/her skin, existentially speaking, and needs to project "artifice" to compensate, figuratively speaking! |

On that bombshell! There could be a red herring in there somewhere. Which one I couldn't say. Robert Forster would have made a good Buddy Holly (visually not vocally) in his early days, better than Gary Busey at least. |

Thomas, I'm absolutely astounded by Robert and Grant's favourite top-ten albums; really groovy selections. Looking at Robert's list, "The Wolfking of LA" was ex Mama's and Papa's leader John Phillips' only solo album ("Mama" Cass Elliott was the most succesful soloist for the quartet, I read). Has that album Phillips's only solo Hit, "Mississippi"? And, looking at Grant's list, What Blondie album is he actually referring to, and what was it's best-known track? (That's a very interesting one indeed!) Now you'll have to find out the top ten favourite albums for Amanda, Lindy, John and Robert Vickers (they'll be facinating too)! |

it was the first Blondie album. The best known track was X-Offender. Dont think that the Rolling Stone magazine will print lindys/amandas/roberts top 10 lists. But Robert Vickers was interviewed for their go-betweens-special..so.. you never know;-) |

Trainspotters alert! Whilst digging around in a box came across a MM from 1987 featuring RF's 'Vinyl Solution'. A 'favourite records' kinda thing... Norman Rowe & The Playboys 'Oh La La' The Raspberries 'Go All the Way' Nat King Cole 'Those Lazy Hazy Days of Summer' The Smiths 'I Know It's Over' The Carpenters 'Close to You' Dion & The Belmonts 'The Wanderer' Anne Sexton 'Passing Through' Modern Lovers 'Hospital' Petula Clark 'Don't Sleep in the Subway' Dylan 'Knockin' on Heavens Door' Lindsay Buckingham 'Trouble' Aztec Camera 'We Could Send Letters' The second last choice is interesting, given some recently expressed liking amongst G-B list members for latter days Fleetwood Mac! There are comments for all of his choices and it makes fascinating reading. If anyone wants me to mail a scanned copy, just mail me.. |

I think that the top 10 question is 'top of the head' journalism and its bollocks, where's Talking Heads? where's Television? we all know what Robert likes and we all know that when asked what our top 10 is on Monday that it'll be totally different on Tuesday. Right ,my top 10 for today is: Teenage Fanclub - Man-made Caroline trettine - 10 Light years Malcolm Ross - Low Shot Roxy Music - Avalon Josef k - The Only Fun in Town Velvets - Live at Max's GB's - Oceans Apart Scott Walker - Sings Jaques Brel Felt - Pictorial Jackson Review Blue Aeroplanes - Swagger, if I can have an extra one G McLennan - Horse Breaker Star! Night Y'all. |

Yeah Robert, low Shot is ace, again as overlooked as most mavericks are, you played on that right! Another great album of late was Spike Priggen's The Very Thing That you treasure, I know you were invoilved with Spike in the Big Louise a few years ago too. What are you up to lately? Cheers Spence |

I played on the half of the album recored in New York. We also played some shows it was great fun. Spike has a new album out now called 'Stars After Stars After Stars' of covers of obscure songs, Jacobites, Tracey Thorn etc. Since I've been working on the label side I've haven't played much at all. Last thing I did was an album called 'Gold' by Alice Texas about 5 years ago. A full time job makes it hard to find the time needed to really commit to a band. |

Robert, Would this be the same Spike who was/is a pal of Mark Mulcahy and Ray Neal (ex-Miracle Legion)? And who came to Edinburgh one year and played and sang with Malcolm Ross' C&W band? Many lengendary evenings with Paul Haig (Velvets covers) and Billy Mackenzie guesting...ahh memories. |

Thanks Robert yeah its a shame you can't commit toanother musical venture. I'd heard Spike has a new album out on Dave Graney's label Cokaigne. Andrew, you are right about Spike he did come to Edinburgh, he also played in the C&W Malcolm had whilst they lived in london. You saw the C&W group too! Buckley's Chance they are now called, good old Billy Mac too, what a shame, probably one of the best singers the world ever had!. |

I've got a spare copy of Malcolm Ross' Lowshot if anybody is interested. Having bought one copy, saw another CD by him with a completely different cover and was duped into buying the same CD twice. Anyway if anyone wants it, it's theirs - let's say in exchange for Robert Forster's toe nail clippings! Mail me off list. |

The album on Dave's label is 'Stars' and it has a version of the Orange Juice song Felicity that I played on. Spike also toured Austr. opening for Dave and Claire recently. Here's his website for further investigation. www.spikepriggen.com Mark Mulcahy also has an excellent new album out called 'In Pursuit of your Happiness'. Definitely worth hearing. |

Robert, can I say that I think you are even more of visionary and genius than I thought before for choosing 'The Good Son'? The time when Nick started crooning like a God. Great, great album. Dusty in Memphis is a classic too. Not sure about Bowie though. Eurrgh!! |
