Hi hello,

yesterday I have been to Frankfurt Mousonturm and saw an amazing concert with a lot of highlights. After the third encore the croud still went crazy and called for the band to continue...
More to follow (incl. setlist) but running out of time

So here I am back again!
First of all I have to say, that this was the best Robert Forster concert I have seen so far!!!
Seen him in the 90s twice in the Zeche Bochum and the concerts were fine but this concert was outstanding. You will understand that when you see the Setlist:

Setlist Robert Forster Mousonturm, Frankfurt, 30.09.2008

1. From Ghost Town
2. Spirit
3. Love Is A Sign
4. Rock’n Roll Friend
-------------------------------------
5. If It Rains (+ Adele)
6. The Evangelist
7. Angels (+Glenn)
8. Demon Days (+Matthew)
9. I’m Alright
-------------------------------------
10. Don’t Touch Anything
11. Clouds
12. Born To A Family
13. Head Full Of Steam
14. Pandanus
15. Make Her Day
16. Quiet Heart
17. Surfing Magazines
18. German Farmhouse
19. Darlinghurst Nights
20. Did She Overtake You
21. Spring Rain
22. Here Comes The City
--------------------------------------
23. Dive For Your Memories
24. Heart Out To Tender
--------------------------------------
25. ????
26. Caroline & I
--------------------------------------
27. Temptation Inside Your Heart
28. People Say

The first four songs he played solo and what more can I say... Rock'n Roll Friend and Love is a Sign!
After those songs he introduced Adele, Glenn and Mat to the audience!
This first part including I'm Alright was quite introverted but wonderful.
After the seven minute break :-) the band played very powerful (as you can hear it from Joe's Pub, NYC).
Then came Quiet Heart and I got very quiet...
I don't want to quote too many things, but playing Dive for your memory... no words.
Then came a long version of Heart out to tender and after a while Robert began to dance and got very extroverted (as we know and like him :-))
--- sorry but I could not recognize song no. 25 ---

After two and an half hours and three encores the concert was over even if the croud wanted much more.
I had to drive 250 km back home and got very tired but I enjoyed any moment of this concert!

Looking forward to cologne on sunday where my brother a a very good friend of mine who has never seen the Go-Bees live will join me! It is his 40s birthday the day before and I got 50 years old this august. Grant would be my age as well ;(

But two more things must be said:
In the german Rolling Stone Forum a fan said that the concert was quite o.k. but Glenn's guitar playing has destroyed some of the songs because it was so different to Grant's.
He is right that Glenn interpretes the songs different. His guitar playing was not that filigran (is this the right word in english?) but it was very powerful. I loved it as well. Grant can't join us and play but he would have liked it as well!
The other thing is that I am looking forward to meeting the band on sunday! I love them all and Adele is waving and smiling to me! That is very special to The Go-Betweens fan who is aged 50 :-)
o.k. forget it :-)

cu on sunday at the Gloria cologne where I have seen my last Go-Bees concert and where the whole band has signed my barbican copy!!!
yours, Andreas.

I loved Glenn's playing as well, and I actually thought he channeled Grant's playing pretty nicely on some songs. On other songs, I thought he at least channeled the concept behind Grant's melodic lead approach back in the 80s.

Fine Trou,

I'll be on the right hand side of the stage with a red McLennan shirt on I guess :-)
Spence you are right, but it is not the forum - people there are as excited as I. It was just one guy and I love the way Glenn plays.

Andreas, age has no barrier in expressing joy with musical genius, supported by Adele & Glenn two of the most talented musicians I will ever see. (Matt is emerging)

I have reached fifty & beyond and enjoyed this warm ride for over 25 years. Pleased the German leg was as successful as elsewhere.

Mt Buller Victoria (Aust) beckons in January 09 for more in a two day festival with Nick Cave & RF returning..cant wait again..

berlin, 4th of october, passionskirche, berlin-kreuzberg

what should i say? it was an magnificent show. the setlist must be similar to the one andreas severins wrote above. great was the patti smith hommage ''when she sang about angles'' which was dedicated to Leonhaed Cohen who played at the same time in berlin, too. but we had no third encore. don't know why because the people liked the show and clapped and clapped, but after nearly 2 and a half hour the lights went on and that was it. sadly, no 'people say' .

the passionskirche is a church and you have to sit in the pews (is that the correct english word?), but some (4 or 5) middle aged men (something between 40 and 50 like the most of us.) started to dance (or something similar :-) ) in the front of the stage. it looked strange and weird, but the crowd liked it and RF, too. By the way: Robert Forster dressed in his black suite fitted perfectly into the chruch. after the show he signed everything and was friendly and talked with the crowd. it was a great evening and i left the building with a smile on my face and with darlinghurst nights on my lips (whic i still can't get out of my head...).

many greetings

andreas

Hi hello,

back from yesterdays cologne conert at the gloria, a former cinema. My brother and a friend of mine who has never seen the Go-Betweens nor Robert were with me!
The concert was even better than in frankfurt which was nearly impossible....
Andreas is right, no third encore, but, but ...
as well 28 songs and almost two and a half hours of finest performance!!
Here's the setlist:

Setlist Robert Forster Gloria, Köln, 05.10.2008

1. Something For Myself
2. Spirit
3. Love Is A Sign
4. Rock’n Roll Friend
-------------------------------------
5. If It Rains (+ Adele)
6. The Evangelist
7. When She Sang About Angels (+Glenn)
8. Demon Days (+Matthew)
9. I’m Allright
-------------------------------------
10. Too Much Of One Thing
11. Clouds
12. Born To A Family
13. Head Full Of Steam
14. Pandanus
15. Make Her Day
16. Quiet Heart
17. Surfing Magazines
18. German Farmhouse
19. Don't Touch Anything
20. Darlinghurst Nights
21. Spring Rain
22. Caroline & I
23. Here Comes The City
--------------------------------------
24. Dive For Your Memories
25. Heart Out To Tender
--------------------------------------
26. Dive For Your Memories
27. Justice
28. Second-Hand Furniture

So, a surprising start with "Something For Myself" and in both meanings a surprising end of the concert with no third encore but "Second-Hand Furniture"!
Rarely heared songs in wonderful versions with the best Adele I have ever seen and with Robert being in form from the very beginning! Matthew's drumming fits perfectly to Adele's bass play!

After the concert Robert signed almost everything he got and was very friendly to everyone!

Hope to see the band again as soon as possible!

So, Robert, Adele and co. - you know what to do :-))

I last visited this message board after attending three of the RF performances in Australia, in Melbourne, Hepburn Springs and Brisbane. I have now seen two of the German shows, in Frankfurt and Köln and the thing that really struck me with these two German shows is just how location-specific they were. Not in a cheesy or insincere way, but rather in a way that seems to bring out the fact that many of the songs have their roots here. On the other hand, the German sing-along to 'Surfing Magazines' — a song that is quintessentially Australian — in Frankfurt especially was slightly surreal to witness and seemed to transcend all sense of local specificity. The greatest pleasure, however, has been to witness the return of play, variation, risk and experiment in the set construction, and everything that flows from this. It is something that seemed to go missing a bit on the final Go-Betweens tour in 2005, when the set lists were so much more fixed and in place.

Great post David. I was trying to think about what made them sound and look better than when I last saw them in 2005 and you have managed to answer for me, "to witness the return of play, variation, risk and experiment in the set construction,". The group seem no less passionate but there's something quite electric about them now. It might even be down to the move of Glenn to guitar, vox and keys, and the intro of the new and very very young! looking drummer!

Anyway well said and nicely articulated, thanks.

Kein problem, Spence. My feeling here is that the return of a certain playfulfulness in the set construction is not so much due to personel changes, although they have definitely added to the improvement here. Rather, I think this is much more structural and a product of the liberating of RF in the aftermath of Grant McLennan's death. Of course, this is a difficult subject to delve into in a way that is duly respectful to Grant's memory. But I think if you look at the set lists from the 2005 tour you will see that there was no great variation from night to night or over the course of the tour (certainly nothing like we have witnessed this year), and the shows I saw then, including the Brisbane show recorded for the 'Striped Sunlight Sound' DVD, while enjoyable were, I felt, a little flat and predictable. Indeed, this situation can perhaps be understood to feed into the lyrical thrust of 'Demon Days', which, incidentally, was, for me, the standout song from last night's show in Köln.

"Secondhand Furniture!" I am so jealous. Yes, the variation is remarkable. He's making the tour fun for himself as well as the audience.

I look forward to Catherine's pan-European report.

Wow, I'm pretty jealous about "Secondhand Furniture," too. I've long maintained that the Peel Sessions EP is one of the coolest things the Go-Betweens ever did, and I love every second of it. Not sure how well I could've contained myself had they played that in SF.

David, I agree with you, it goes without saying that none of us would have any intention of being disrespectful to Grant. However, this is the here and now, with Robert and the gang. The whole tour is billed as Robert Forster. But when I saw them in Oxford, apart from the obvious, it was a Go-Betweens show as far as I am concerned. The 'Striped' DVD, I agree with your comments onthat. However, I personally don't think it was recorded as well as it could've been. I think this has been discussed before, but I wouldn't knock the 2005 concerts I suppose, just because of that particular release, they did blow me away in 05, but this time, the event seemed miles better, that's why I think its down the personalties that are within the RF camp, as board members have mentioned, who else suits and makes Robert tock all the boxes, but Adele and Glenn, and now Matt...

Reflecting on how I felt on hearing/seeing GB's mk II for the first time, I never thought they'd have had the appeal to me and countless others as the original line up did. They had, in fact, the total oppposite, they got it on, the line up renergised things, I feel this line up has renergised things, again! Woahhhhh!

Hi together, first of all I have to correct the setlist a bit :-)

Setlist Robert Forster Gloria, Köln, 05.10.2008

1. Something For Myself
2. Spirit
3. Love Is A Sign
4. Rock’n Roll Friend
-------------------------------------
5. If It Rains (+ Adele)
6. The Evangelist
7. When She Sang About Angels (+Glenn)
8. Demon Days (+Matthew)
9. I’m Allright
-------------------------------------
10. Too Much Of One Thing
11. Clouds
12. Born To A Family
13. Head Full Of Steam
14. Pandanus
15. Make Her Day
16. Quiet Heart
17. Surfing Magazines
18. German Farmhouse
19. Don't Touch Anything
20. Darlinghurst Nights
21. Spring Rain
22. Caroline & I
23. Here Comes The City
--------------------------------------
24. He lives my life
25. Heart Out To Tender
--------------------------------------
26. Dive For Your Memoriy
27. Justice
28. Second-Hand Furniture

Then David and spence, you are both so right. There is another point I would like to enlight (maybe:-)
I have seen the Go-Bees and Robert so often in a concert, but, but...
During MKII I never heared a better rhythm section than Adele and Matthew.
Glenn is a good musician, but if you compare his drumming to Matthews, there are worlds inbetween!

Sorry Glenn, I like your playing the guitar and your own album. But this has to be said.
And if you look only at Adele how much fun she has playing and playing very, very powerful (sometimes just like a guitar)!
Especially at the cologne concert you could see, how the whole band is "just" having fun and enjoying playing together.

I love it!

So, hope for a new album in the near future and further tours...
Andreas.

Back from Cologne. I agree with everything that has been said above. What a wonderful evening... "Demon days" chained with "I'm allright" was my highlight but everything was perfect.

The first photos with the little camera, the best should come later.

it was nice to meet you! Haven't seen you after the concert! Guess you went home straight away...

One of my highlights has been Second-Hand Furniture, because I loved the song for such a long time but this has been the first time I heared it live. And it was a wonderful performance!!!

but returned a few seconds later for one last song)
28. I Can Do

original sheet:
http://www.riechert-berlin.de/home1/conc erts/081004rf/setlist.html

It was the most touching concert. You could see the band struggeling with their emotions on some of these songs, especially Demon Days and Quiet Heart. Concert of the year, Grant would be proud...

We could hear the soundcheck while waiting outside the church (Passionskirche).
After it the door opened, Robert looked at us, held up both hands and said: “We’re sounding GREAT!” while the whole band followed him to the Italian restaurant opposite.

And they WERE sounding great!

Thank you Hopiman and Trou for the great pics. I have made some from the munich show, which was an absolutely great one. You can see the pics here: http://www.fotocommunity.de/pc/pc/mypics /1245924/startpic/0

The set was mainly the same as in Berlin if I remember right. I can't remember a better version of Head Full Of Steam (and I've seen the Go-Be's quite a few times). A great triumph for a great performer.

So... It's been almost a week since the return from glorious days in Germany, to Norwegian domesticness and a great sense of deflation after the experiences last week. Thankfully, great reports have emerged from Berlin here already. Cheers Andreas, shame we didn't meet!

Berlin is probably my favorite city, and the perfect place to attend a Robert Forster concert. He belongs in Germany in some sense, even disregarding his personal and professional connections to the country. Berlin has become a haven for Norwegian hipsters the last few years, with cheap flights and accomodation. Many young artists move there, even buying their own apartments, which in Berlin are about the third of the prices in Oslo. Berlin feels close, and as a result, we were eleven Norwegians at Passionskirche last Saturday! Not bad at at all. We even behaved ourselves, and left the in-church dancing to the Irish...

But I'm getting ahead of myself. The adventure didn't start in Berlin, far from it. I feel very privileged to have been to Dresden, Thursday Oct 2nd, Lukaskirche. A magnificent show, in somewhat bizarre surroundings. Got in by train from Berlin at 5.00 PM with my very good friend, band mate and fellow Go-Betweens fanatic Christopher. We commenced to have dinner in a place called Ayers Rock, a half tacky but quite decent Australian restaurant right in the middle of Dresden's tourist track. The tone was set, we felt, for the complete Aussie experience. This didn't end until we encountered, but rejected to enter, a cafe called "Forster" after the show. The ostrich at Ayers Rock was good, but we didn't dare mention this to Robert.

After a post meal beer we made our way to Lukaskirche, which is situated amidst houses and low rise apartment building just south of Dresden main train station. We were in a hurry, and upon entering the church the crowd of about 100 people applauded, not us obviously, but Robert Forster, who entered the podium on his own and picked up his beautiful Guild acoustic.

We have Hopiman's Berlin set list for reference, and the acoustic set was similar with two exceptions: "Rock'n Roll Friend" was not there, and "Too Much of One Thing" rounded out this part instead of starting the next. It was great, and the full band set was even better. Again, it was similar to Berlin two days later, with the bonus of an off the cuff inclusion of "Temptation Inside Your Heart" somewhere in the middle.

I mentioned that the surroundings were bizarre, well, it's an overstatement, but in this church there were no drinks served, and the only door I observed with the letters W and C on it was the one the band entered and exited through. All in all, a very civilized evening. No Irishmen were dancing in the isles.

The encores were immense, a woman immediately called out for "Rock'n Roll Friend" and Robert went right into it like he had planned it anyway. Just him alone. "121" followed, and it was my favorite song of the night. Then, Robert announced that they wouldn't bother with going off and coming back on numerous times, "we'll just play some songs, you know..." Extremely cool. "I Can Do", "Dive for your Memory" and People Say", and then it was over.

At the interval between set 1 and 2 we had noticed the sign by the merchandise table: Robert here 6 minutes after the show! And then, there he was, signing everything that was put in front of him, chatting away with everyone. We mentioned - of course - that we were on our way to Berlin, and Robert wanted to know if we had been to Passionskirche before, as he was very curious about the venue. We hadn't, but we wanted to know when he was coming to Norway. He couldn't say, but the topic re-emerged two days later.

At the table I found the Caroline and I CD-single ("for promotion only"), which I bought. These days, nothing beats the feeling of hearing a Go-Betweens or Robert song for the first time, and I got plenty with "Girl Lying on a Beach" and "Instant Replay". More of this was to come in Berlin, where I heard "Heart out to Tender" and "Justice" for the very first time. (Yes, I admit it! I don't have Danger in the Past! I am ashamed!)

Another unbeatable thing is to leave the best concert you've ever been to, knowing that you'll most likely relive it two days later. Berlin was a blast, as usual, and the gang met up on Friday night for food and drink, eventually ending up in a bar in Prenzlauer Berg where they, after we'd announced our mission for the weekend, immediately switched to Oceans Apart, followed by a few tracks from Liberty Belle. Great people. A curious thing was that they also switched on a TV with a channel that screened the Norwegian film Insomnia (remade in Hollywood by Christopher Nolan), without sound, to accompany the music and beer. Anything to make us feel at home...

The next day, nothing could stop us. We were going to see Robert! The taxi hit another car, the Italian restaurant took exactly one hour to serve a one course meal, but we made it. Me and Christopher and Chris got good seats in the middle of the church (which had both bar and toilet, by the way), Terje and Anne was first row, while Eirik, Anders, Olav, Espen #1, Espen #2 and Jens were scattered about the place. Top people, cheers to you all.

The opening set was, for me, better in Berlin than in Dresden. I was closer, and I felt closer. "Rock'n Roll Friend" was there, and Robert's description of the song gave me a lot. The second part of the show was great, and just one song didn't really work. As in Dresden, "Born to a Family" seemed a tad to slow, and much too jumpy. Or something. The rest was magnificent.

Later, all the encores blew me away. I was stunned when they did "Caroline and I", as I had not known that it had featured in earlier shows, and so I made the mistake of assuming that they had a fixed number of songs to choose from.

Robert's signature on my The Evangelist CD two nights before wasn't enough, so I presented Robert with my very recently bought copy of The Go-Betweens Song Book, which he signed "From Norway. Robert '08". Anne then brought up the prospect of him coming to Norway. This exchange followed:

Robert: Oslo, then?
Anne: No, Trondheim!
Robert: Oh, Trondheim!
Anne: Yeah!
Robert: And maybe Bergen! And Stavanger!
Me: We'll do it all!

So there we have it. Norwegian tour next year. You're all invited to stay at my house.

Oh how I'd love to see and hear Second Hand Furniture played live. Thanks for all the great reviews above.

Svein, that was a terrific account! I would have been going nuts with the crazy mishaps before arriving at the Berlin show.

And of course Robert would know other Norwegian cities.

Svein, you're a bit obsessed with "Irishmen dancing in the isles" at the church! I went to mass at least once a week for the first 16 years of my life and never once did I see anyone dancing in the aisles! What is your reference point? I'll admit my experience of church has been limited in the last quarter century, but I'm pretty sure that dancing in the aisles is still frowned upon!

Pádraig, it's nothing against the Irish in general, I assure you! It was just in reference to Andreas who mentioned the 4 or 5 middle aged men dancing in front of the stage in Berlin. I happen to know that they were Irish. They were also quite drunk.

svein,

what a pity that we didn't met. i was kind of off-topic from this board and didn't read for a while, so i didn't noticed that you will be on the road in germany . your report from dresden and berlin is great. yes, and believe it or not: we have (maybe)''seen'' us at that evening, because i heard that dialogue between anne and robert. and, did you talk with those irish ''dancers''? it looked crazy, didn't it?

best wishes,

andreas
