Anyone here into David Kilgour at all? Just bought 'Frozen Orange' after hearing a track on the radio and i love it. Anyone got any reccomendations for other things of his to buy? Cheers! (PS - am i the only person not to have heard 'Oceans Apart' yet???) | ||

You can't go wrong with his 'Here Come The Cars' album. It's one of those really rare consistant albums with no weak links. The only thing that lets it down slightly is the terrible production. Don't let that put you off though, the quality of the songs save the day. One of my favouite albums. | ||

gareth - as someone who used to write a fanzine largely based on the singular talents of dave kilgour and his brother hamish (they were in the legendary nz band, the clean)i can recommend 'feather in the engine' which i think is his very finest album....'here comes the cars' is damn good too....'sugar mouth' is also good....he never makes a dud...they've all got great stuff on them...real robert forster fan as well! | ||

Gareth, there's a double CD Clean compilation which is excellent. As well as album tracks it has early EP stuff which you never see anywhere else. Of their individual albums Vehicle is my favourite as it was the first one I bought. The third person in The Clean is Robert Scott. His main band is The Bats (though they have not released an album in 10 years). I would recommend almost anything by them, but start with Silverbeet, which is a New Zealand power pop classic, and then get Couchmaster, which is a downbeat, almost folky, end of a long term relationship record (it sounds great on vinyl, but the CD version sounds fine too and will be a lot easier to find in bargain bins). Knowing your tastes a little, I know that you will love the Clean double CD and Silverbeet. I won't guarantee that you'll love Couchmaster. It can be a bit too raw and close to the bone. It took me a long time to come to love it. | ||

Don't forget The Bats 'Daddy's Highway' album, fantastic record. Again, like David Kilgour's 'Here Come The Cars', it's another of those albums with no weak links. | ||

Great posts! Anything Kilgour-related is not to be missed! The Clean, Great Unwashed, Stephen...Side projects from Hamish (David's brother) in The Mad Scene are incredible as well. You can't go wrong with this as Robert Vickers plays bass! Hi Robert! Also, The Bats cd's are brilliant! Encompassing all of these recordings are the cd's from Robert Scott's THE MAGICK HEADS! Do yourself a favor and locate these at all costs. They have become a favorite of mine, and you will love the incredible vocals of Jane Sinnott and the amazing songwriting of the genius that is Robert Scott. | ||

Hi there, rightright.."here come the cars has a horrible production, but i think that there is a remastered version available ( also for some other albums by david ), but i havent heard it yet. There are also some bonustrax on it. "Compilation" by the clean is a must. The Bats have a bew album, but they seem to have problems to find a recordlabel. Dont know, if Flying Nun will bring it out. If anyone knows a recordlabel ( for europe, usa, australia etc. ) who could be interested, please let me know / thokeihh@aol.com If anyone´s interested in Robert Scott latest releases..go to www.powertoolrecords.co.nz there you can buy the "Tudor Gates EP" and his new FOLKalbum "Songs of otagos past". vehicle is a masterpiece no doubt the clean compilation is great - anything can happen - is one of my favourite songs it has a beautiful fragile vocal and an irresistible thin alt country clang behind it, all sounding as though it was recorded inside a dirty wheelie bin - well sort of | ||

My first brush with The Clean came a year ago when Lambchop covered 'Tally Ho' at a Brisbane gig. Subsequently, I went and bought The Clean Anthology (that two-disc one that Merge put out). I agree that it's very good. If you're in Australia, it sells, reduced, for about 10 dollars at JB Hi-fi shops. | ||

Merge Records here in the US are to be releasing Kilgour's "Here Come The Cars" and "Sugar Mouth" in the next few months. Remastered. Looking forward to better sounding cd's. | ||

I was pleased to see the Johnnys still cover Anything Could Happen, which also appeared on their second album Grown Up Wrong. That Clean double CD is essential. I also like Kilgour's Sugar Mouth. | ||

Just took the plunge and bought 'Anthology' and 'Feather in the Engine'. 'Feather...' is playing now and sounds great - nice home made feel to it. Good tips one and all! Will tide me over until 'Oceans Apart' concludes its 3965 mile postal journey to my doorstep...Cue poor pun about being an ocean apart... | ||
