Dont blame me cos its not December yet, but Mojo and Q have already listed their top 50 records of the year in the issues I got today. I'll list the top 10s from both, so look away now if you buy these mags and would rather wait and see them when you buy them. Mojo. 1. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes 2. The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age of Understatement 3. Paul Weller - 22 Dreams 4. Bon Iver - For Emma,Forever Ago 5. Nick Cave - Dig Lazarus Dig 6. The Hold Steady - Stay Positive 7. Glasvegas - Glasvegas 8. The Week That Was - The Week That Was 9. The Bug - London Zoo 10.Neil Diamond - Home Before Dark I really rate 1,4,5,6 and 9 - but not in that order. 9 and 4 are tops for me. Q. 1. Kings of Leon - Only By The Night 2. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes 3. Coldplay - Viva La Vida 4. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend 5. Glasvegas - Glasvegas 6. Duffy - Rockferry 7. TV On The Radio - Dear Science 8. Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid 9. The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely 10.Nick Cave - Dig Lazarus Dig 2,7 and 10 do it for me. WTF happened to Kings Of Leon? What a waste of a great band. |

Mr ETM, a varied list to be sure and at least half of it floats my boat. I will provide mine over the next few days - it will be a damn sight harder to list than last years thats for sure. What a poor year that was, this year has been a bonaza year in comparison. On the reissue front its also been a belter - no wonder i'm poor! |

What's your opinion, Kev, er, Skull, on the big controversy over the New Order reissues? Are there as many glitches in the bonus discs and track-listing errors as some are saying? |

That's a fine list you got there, Mr. McEwan...I'm with you on at least six of those picks, but I'd have to find room for Portishead's "Third" and maybe Magnetic Fields' "Distortion" and the Bell Divers' "June July." |

Fine discs those...I could probaby be convinced to trade out Jenny for the Fields, though she's way cuter than Stephin Merritt. I know, understatement of the century! |

Mr ETM , I only got Movement, P,CandL and Brotherhood so far. Lowlife and Technique are still on order. The first two albums are perfect to my ears, so is the main Brotherhood album but still to play the bonus disc so that might be dodgy http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/ne ws/147623-new-order-camp-addresses-reiss ue-grievances |

I've been resisting getting drawn in too early but here goes 1. Bon Iver ( can't decide between 1 nad 2 ) 2.Fleet Foxes ( glorious especially White Winter Hymnal) 3.Drive By Truckers ( This is my fave of theirs some great songs) 4. Vampire Weekend ( resisted getting this but lifted the spirits with short snappy pop songs) 5. Robert Wyatt-Comic Opera- slow grower but great ( fave at moment) 6. Hold Steady -Stay Positive 7. Paul Weller-22 Dreams (resisted thwe hype for a long time but gave in and pleasently surprised. 8 EC Momofuku ( best in years) 9. Robert-Evangelist in a worse year would have been higher up the list. 10. Nick Cave-probavly should be higher up the list with HOld steady It has been an excellent year the best IMO in a long time, brightened immensely but Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver |

Can't really make up my mind on Bon Iver. Admittedly, it's a fascinating disc, unlike anything else and the guy builds up a certain mood, a certain atmosphere. I'm just not completely sold on all of the songs on it, though "Skinny Love" is an instant, stone classic. |

For anyone thinking about purchasing the New Order re-issues, the following article appeared in the Guardian newspaper yesterday. *************************************** "New Order have announced that they will reissue their latest reissues, after complaints over their sound quality. People who have already purchased collector edition copies of the band's first five albums will be able to exchange these for the new versions – that is, if they even noticed the problems. "Warner Bros UK, Rhino and New Order regret that the initial pressings of the collector editions of Movement, Power, Corruption & Lies, Low Life, Brotherhood and Technique contain some minor audio problems on the bonus discs," yesterday's statement announced. "We are now in the process of correcting the problems, but it should be noted that due to the age and condition of some of the original source tapes, the sound quality may vary." Though the albums were released in the UK last month, fan furore over sound quality only won a response after the US release this week. And despite fans' loud online complaints, major publications like Q, Mojo and Pitchfork didn't seem to notice the sound issues in their reviews. Then again, New Order bassist Peter Hook did. "This is a very difficult one," he wrote on his MySpace blog. "We are aware of the problems and because we did not have finished product to listen to [before-hand] it has, shall we say ... slipped through the net?" Hook went on to promise that his "great friend" and New Order biographer Claude Flowers would "sort this mess out personally". New Order's collector edition reissues each include a bonus disc of B-sides, instrumentals, remixes and rarities. It's mostly these tracks that aroused listeners' ire, with fans documenting as many as 300 errors. Pops and crackles on the recordings suggested that the songs were transferred from commercially available vinyl recordings – the same ones many fans already own - rather than coming from original master tapes." |

I read that Pitchfork article linked to above and the list of errors from a New Order board. This really is quite a shocking and shoddy lack of control shown by New Order. I thought they would have had more pride in their back catalogue and respect for their fans. Obviously not. |

Padraig, from everything I read, it was the label who was at fault, not New Order. For whatever reason, the band was not able to hear the finished product before it went to press, so it was a quality control issue on the label's part; some glitches made it through. When Hook found out about it, he was said to be quite livid. At least that's the story I read. |

That's exactly my point Jeff. If New Order cared enough in the first place they would have listened to what was about to be issued under their name. (This leaves open the possibility of reopening the whole OA debate of course...) |

Do they own those recordings? If they don't, you could understand how they could be released without their having the chance to vet them. But, if they DO own them, it seems pretty trifling of them. New Order are defunt, correct? So, it's not as if they didn't have the time to listen to them before they went out. |

Padraig, but my point was that the bureaucracy of the label was such that the band was *not* able to listen to them at the final stage. They were given masters, listened to them and approved them, but after that, quality control was out of their hands as they were left out of the loop. An article from Billboard states that Hook "blames the label for not sending out advance copies so that he and his former bandmates could do some quality control." Hook was quoted elsewhere as saying, “What’s been intensely annoying for us is that all these people are complaining because they’ve bought them in the shops and Warner’s chose to release them to the shops before they sent them to the band, so I haven’t got one. A masterful piece of planning.” Hook seems to have listened to all the complaints and spearheaded the movement to get Warners to correct the glitches and reissue corrected replacement copies. That he has bothered to do this (which is a pretty big undertaking) shows to me that New Order does, in fact, care. What could be part of the problem, however, is that Factory lost the masters for some of the bonus material (like b-sides and such), and that some of those tracks had to be sourced from the vinyl. Naturally, there may be some pops in the vinyl that can't be completely removed in the transfer to digital. (And yeah, speaking of OA, did we ever hear peep from Robert or Grant about that? Even after Yep Roc reduced the level by 2.0 dbs and offered replacement copies? Nope. So, if anyone could be accused of "not caring,"....) |

Fair enough Jeff, I hadn't seen those quotes from Hook. Thanks for quoting them above. It would have been nice for those who bought them to have known beforehand if some tracks were just copied from vinyl copies though. It's a bit deceptive to say they are "remastered" in that case. |

That Augie March one is a real grower eh? I'm really getting into that now although it didn't hit me over the head with a saucepan like the one before! I made up my mind that I didn't like the new Coldplay album and was re4ally disappointed in it.....and yet every time I walk into a store, something GREAT is playing and then I remember that it's a song from the album! Is it that rare beast of an album full of songs that work separately but not together? Skulldisco...I already know what you're going to say!!!!! |

Is "Dig Lazarus Dig" honestly good? I haven't heard it but I've learned to be wary of Nick Cave's stuff when he cranks out albums too often and, including "Grinderman," he's put out too much work over the past couple years for it all to be good. How much noisy stuff does he do? I almost invariably hate him when he's doing that. Geoff, for the longest time I had the "one song at a time but not together" experience with Augie March's "Bloody Choir." I finally made the crossing but I do still think the first two albums hold together better as albums. |

It is good, honestly. But if you have already written off Cave as a spent force, it may not convert you. The latest album has far less "noisy stuff" than Grinderman, but it isn't "Nick the piano-player balladeer" like "The Boatman's Call" either. |

Oddly, I don't have "Boatman's Call." My favorite Nick Cave moments are things like the title song of "Your Funeral, My Trial," "Sad Waters," "Long Time Man," "Mercy Seat" if it had audible bass on it, "Foi Na Cruz," pretty much all of "No More Shall We Part" and I loaded a total of 7 songs from Abattoir/Orpheus so I don't consider him a spent force but I do think he needs pruning. Thanks for your input. It sounds like "Lazarus" is worth having. |

And sure enough, it's a great album too, Rob! It's been sitting in my house for who knows--two years? I must have bought it in a huge pile from Amoeba and then unwisely shelved it in the Nick Cave section before playing it. |

No, not wrapped. I bought it used. What I've learned to do is leave recent acquisitions in a visible irritating heap on the coffee table until they've been heard enough times (and probably also loaded onto iTunes--I blame iTunes for my less regular visits to the CD shelves) that I can be reasonably sure I don't forget that I have them. The Nick Cave disc must have been purchased before I'd learned to do that. I've been familiar with Lloyd Cole's version of "People Ain't No Good" for years and I would have made a bee-line at least for Cave's version of that superb song but this version did not sound familiar to me at all. I hadn't even heard it once. Amazing. And, yeah, I wish I could write a song like "People Ain't No Good." What a song! But I really do only have about 1800 CDs. So I'm not as sick as Padraig. Yet. |

Yeah, that's very funny Randy. Mocking the afflicted... So anyway, last night I spent about an hour looking for The Zombies' Odyssey & Oracle album to play it while I read a year old article on it (it's not just CDs I buy and then don't play/read). But by the time I found it I didn't want to play it anymore! While looking I found a whole lot more CDs I bought and haven't played, including the CD86 comp bigged up by Jonathan and Randy here lately. |

no, spence this year wasn't as bad as you mention (in my humple opinion). so, here are my favourites: fire on fire - the orchard (at the end of the year young god records send me the first full length album of that collective of cerberus shoal members and micah blue smaldone doing something special) micah blue smaldone - the red river (read in a critic: folk music that is infused with a very present and immediate emotion) hush arbors - s/t (something between neil young and six organs of admittance) e.s.t. - leucocyte (jazz sounding like gybe!) james blackshaw - litany of echoes (god of the 12-strings) brethren of the free spirit - all things are from him, through him and in him (a lute and a 12-string) fleet foxes - sun giant ep (just say: mykonos) fleet foxes - s/t (like from another time) dark captain light captian - miracle kicker (maybe my favourite of the this years releases) the owl service - a garland of songs (every fairport or tree fan would like that) good as usual, but not a highlight of the year: the black keyes - attack & release motorpsycho - little lucid moments the sea and cake - car alarm sometimes i like this stuff, sometimes not: robert forster - the evangelist kaki king - dreaimng of revenge randy newman - harps and angels bon iver - for emma, forever ago inara george with van dyke parks - an invitation bought in 2008, but originally released in 2007: rachel unthank & the winterset - the bairns (a lifetime album!!!) fire on fire - 5 track ep (if not released in 2007 , this would be my absolutely favourite and outstanding album of the year) big blood - the grove my song of the year: port o'brien - i woke up today (makes me happy everytime i listen to it and watch the video) all the best, andreas |

Augie March - Watch me disappear CW Stoneking - Jungle Blues Robert - The Evangelist Didn't like a lot of the other stuff I got like R.E.M. etc I find I usually only have a couple of faves and a lot of also rans that are bought out of either band loyalty, press ravings, friends ravings, Go Betweens chat room ravings.......! Ask me in 5 years time and I'll have an extensive list of things that, yet again, I've missed! |

Andreas, I agree with you when you say that fans of Fairport Convention/Trees are likely to enjoy 'A Garland Of Song' by The Owl Service. A couple of the tracks on the album remind me of Trader Horne. Nancy Wallace, who sings with The Owl Service, also performs with The Memory Band and other members of that band perform in The Accidental and Tunng. All three play acoustic folk music with a touch of electronic progamming. Tunng have released three albums to date and if you enjoy contemporary British folk music then they are well worth checking out. Some of my favourites of 2008. The Accidental - There Were Wolves Aerial Maps - In The Blinding Sunlight Cloud Cult - Feel Good Ghosts ( Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes Coming Soon - New Grids Uncle Jelly Fish - Lucky Nerval Teeth |

hugh, thanks for your recommendations. tunng is the only band i know. the memory band seems very interesting - and not only because the remixed soft cell's 'youth' http://www.myspace.com/hungryhill . i will have an eye on them (but to be true, i also had an eye on tunng and never bought anything of them. buying everything is impossible). that's the same with hercules and love affair which kevin mentions. i remember having an exicting listening of the whole album at the time it was released. euphoric as i was i posted in our long time running thread what are you listening to. as you can imagine i never bought this album. and not because i dislike it. |

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Dig! Lazarus Dig! Portishead - Third TV on the Radio - Dear Science Santogold - s/t David Byrne & Brian Eno - Everything That Happens... Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It Okkervil River - The Stand Ins Robert Forster - The Evangelist Randy Newman - Harps and Angels Elvis Costello - Momofuku (I feel hopelessly retro with the last two, but I'd rather listen to boring old farts with something to say making stong, confident albums than boring young farts like that certain group of hairy young hippies with the initials FF. And Mr. Forster's album docked a couple of spots because, honestly, it's only a top 10 album if you're a Go-Betweens fan. I can't imagine it registering with anybody else.) |

Who cares about anybody else? This IS a Go Betweens fan bulletin board. I agree with whoever said "The Evangelist" may be Robert's best solo album. As usual I've bought relatively few current releases this year. They will trickle in over the next couple years. Besides Robert's album, the Augie March and Aerial Maps albums rate well with me. |
