'Before Hollywood' because it was the least compromised by '80s production values...and for Lindy playing real drums all the way through, no programmed drums. If only 'Liberty Belle' or 'Tallulah" had been recorded as well. | ||

1990: Im 22, finished uni,stoned, on the dole and listening to SMAL over and over and over. Magnificent album for that age bracket. Couldnt play it now though. Have to go with Spring Hill Fair. fave track - "Hope" - that scandalously ignored, wonderful, wonderful pop track from that "very quick on the Eye" bootleg. In fact, it gets my vote for best pop song of all time. Should be covered in gold and sent to heaven from all of us down here. | ||

Liberty Belle. "Spring Rain" has to be one of the best opening songs ever, "Apology Accepted" one of the best closers, and there's not much wrong in between! 16LL second. Just got OA after after finally getting to see them, and I'd say it's the best since reforming, with a couple of potential classics. | ||

I'm going out on a limb here. After living with it for the last two weeks I firmly believe that Oceans Apart is the best Go-Betweens album ever - and I've been a fan since the early 80s. My other faves are Spring Hill Fair, Liberty Belle, and Before Hollywood. | ||

I love all of them but to me, 16LL is absolutely perfect. It's one of those seemingly effortless records that were a dime a dozen in the sixties and at the time renewed my faith in the power of music to change one's life. I can't think of a better album in all of pop music except maybe Marquee Moon. | ||

Hard to say, but: (in no particular order)16LL, LB&TBDE, TFORW, OA. these are the ones that as whole albums are great, but on the others there are wonderful songs but perhaps one or two that are not up to their high standards. | ||

while tallulah and 16LL have incredible high points (bye bye pride, dive for your memory), they also have - for my ears - some pretty dodgy monents. i think that liberty belle is still the best track for track. a pity that it was recorded by mark wallis. at the time, i was really frustrated that they couldn't afford someone like stephen street or steve lilywhite to produce - they would have kept the "live" feeling but made it punchier and more palatable to a broader selection of ears. (actually, the songs on oceans apart are also awesomely consistent.) | ||

Still 16LL, although I gained a renewed appreciation for Liberty Belle and Tallulah with the reissues. And I maintain a fondness for SHF, the album that got me into the Go-Betweens. Of the Go-Bs Part 2 albums, I'm thinking Oceans Apart, but I'm unsure how it will stand the test of a few months in my head. | ||

I agree with Mark. We are, again, living in a time of classic Go Betweens with Oceans Apart, their best album. It's late autumn here in Auz, and this is THE perfect album for the season.I'll be remembering this autumn especially because of it. I really rate it alongside Liberty Belle, Before Hollywood and Springhill Fair. And what a change from the last album they released!!!!! I thought they were dead in the water after a promising regrouping. I also agree with tricko. Dive for your memory is fantastic but remember that they split after 16LL and the production sounds dated and wan. Fire when ready..... | ||

It's now the first day of winter in Sydney (not that it's cold mind). I love Oceans Apart. As I said a couple of months ago in a different thread here; seven of the 10 songs are classic Go-Betweens. However, it has become a boom-box-in-the-kitchen-only album for me. The rubbish mastering job is too distracting when the album is played on a good hi-fi, and I have taken it off the iPod as it sounded even worse through headphones. It's a great pity, but I do enjoy it on the boom box while cooking, eating and doing the dishes. My daughter has become so used to hearing it in the kitchen that when I put on the new Gorillaz album the other night she protested and asked for the "Garbage-Beans" instead. I was thrilled! (She's 3-and-a-half). | ||

Interestingly, my daughter (also three and a half) sings along with Oceans Apart too - particularly No Reason To Cry (which I think is something we're often telling her). I think it's my second favourite GB lp after Liberty Belle. Must be my ears, but OA sounds all right to this ill-educated dolt. | ||

I didn't know what she wanted, but finally realized she was asking me to play Fats Domino's "Little Liza Jane". I had just gotten the four-disc box set of 100 tunes and somehow that song had captured her attention. | ||

Everybody has his or her favorites but in my opion their best album is always the last album they make. And that's the strength of the Go-Betweens. They are in the 'zeitgeist'. | ||

Peter, my daughter's favourite is also No Reason To Cry! Must be a wee girl thing! She has taken to singing it (the chorus anyway) even when the album is not on. Guy, I must check out that Little Liza Jane song. The only song I have with Liza in it is The Jam's Liza Radley. Never liked it much, though I love The Jam. | ||

The only version of "Little Liza Jane" I have is David Bowie's first record in 1964 when he was still David Jones. Very callow, that one. Hopefully Grant and Robert see this site now and then. My suggestion to them is that if they ever do any casual acoustic gigs without Glenn and Adele they bill themselves "The Garbage Beans." | ||

Before Hollywood. The most unified and cohesive album. RF and GM's writing and singing dovetail perfectly with each other and with Lindy's rhythm is mesmerising. |
