indie charts!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/indiealbums.shtml

They are not in the Top 40 of the overall charts and I have not yet been able to find a link to the Top 200, so I don't know where they have charted. Still though, No 9 in the indie charts is not bad, especially considering that Franz Ferdinand; a Kinks compilation; The Killers; and Basement Jaxx are all above them (as are the awful Stereophonics and the NME-hyped Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc Party). I see that Irish band Hal have charted at No 4. Are they any good, anyone? Are they really the new, new Beach Boys?

Here's a link to the Top 75, but I don't get it. They're no 9 in the indie charts, but they lose in the overall charts with albums that are behind the top 10 in the indie charts.

I haven't heard Hal's album yet, but the single "What A Lovely Dance" is... well, lovely. A great, traditional pop song. Similar to The Thrills, but The Thrills never got close to this level of songwriting, that's my opinion.

Thanks Kuba. The indie placing versus regualar chart placing is an anomaly that used to torment me in my youth.

This whole 'indie' thing is crap anyway. Most of these so-called indie labels are just subsidiaries of majors. They that are set-up to suck gullible indie-kids into thinking they are not topping up the coffers of corporate giants. Sober up. Lo-Max is just an EMI artifice. Just like V2 is the Virgin 'indie' label. Virgin of course are themselves now a subsidiary of EMI.

Not that this is any slight of the Go-Betweens. They arn't buying into any of this 'indie' crap. According to the interview with Robert in this weekend's edition of The Australian, the band are delighted to be being signed to EMI at this stage of their career.

Quote: "To be at this stage of our career and at our age to be on EMI and to be promoted and pushed, it's fantastic," says the erudite Forster. "It makes Grant and me very happy."

V2 is not connected with Virgin. Branson set it up four years after selling Virgin to EMI. His deal with EMI precluded him from setting up another record label for at least two years.

EMI's only connection with Lo-Max is they are both releasing Oceans Apart in different territories.

I need to point out that the band´s pan-european label tuition is 100% independent and in no way connected to any sort of major company, the same goes for our spanish partner mushroom pillow.i´m sure robert feels fantastic with these companies as well:-)

The Oceans Apart CDs being sold in Australia list EMI as the record label, with Lo-Max listed in smaller writing. They have EMI catalog numbers. The band themselves seem to believe they are now part of EMI. So how come it qualifies for the 'indie' charts?

Lo-Max is a UK independent label. It's ditributed by Vital. The LP charted at 83 in the UK national chats and no. 9 in the UK indie chart. So the record is definitely an indie an the UK. When these LPs are licensed overseas to other labels (majors and independents) they often feature the parent label's logo.

While I would agree 'Indie' charts are a bit of a joke in terms of both who is eligible and how the rankings are determined they are important. Regardless of accuracy they give everybody a snapshot of what's happening in a genre that would otherwise be pretty much invisible to the industry and general public.

The indie charts in this posting are from the UK and I believe Lo-Max is really an independent label. Lo-Max may have licensed the album to EMI in Australia hence their logo on the packaging.

Jetset is also 100% indie as is, I believe, Yep Rock. EMI Australia may be the first major the GB's have been on in a while. With such a strong record to work with let's hope we see an appearence on the real charts in Australia this time.
