Acid Tongue - Jenny Lewis. Just an acoustic guitar and her great edgily sensuous voice set against an all-male choir on the chorus. Beautiful.

The new record is announced as a disaster. I don't know, but the single is not that bad...

Jeez he looks rough, heroin chic gone AWOL!

I like the guy jumping over the kit!

The song is no different to the kinda stuff he's been writing for the last 20 years.

Spence,

Which Echo cd is Killing Moon (all night version) on? I only have the 1983 vinyl ep. It's one of my top 5 Echo cuts. I also like the live Do It Clean from the same ep.

Michael, its on the recent box set Crystal Days mate. I think DIC that live version, which is absolutely one of the best live things I have EVER heard, is on it too, I ma not totally sure as I only have a few snippets from the box set.

I actually don't think the all night version stands up as good as DIC, its a little too 'stretched out' for me now, though I adored at the time, and its still very good.

Hmm. With that inspiration I'm pulling out my 24 year old copy of "Songs to Learn & Sing." I love "Killing Moon." Let's see how it all sounds to me now notwithstanding the poodle hair . . . .

Spence,
that's funny - I just ordered the NEU 75 cd at amazon :-)
Haven't heared them in the early days tho I liked some songs of La Duesseldorf...

...echo-box - crystal days I have to hear again.
Besides of DIC and Killing Moon I loved the 12" live version of Zimbo with the Royal Burundi Drummers!

Johnny Cash - The Mercy Seat - a wonderful powerful version!

Andreas,

Neu 75 and Neu! are two of the groundbreaking albums of the 70's as far as I'm concerned! Neu 2 is also worth buying, but it's not up to the first and third albums.

When Echo Beach and Once in a Lifetime came out, it seemed to my young mind that they were like instructions on how NOT to live your life...totally great songs. My Dad had retired to a beach house at Lennox Head at the time. Now Echo Beach IS far away in time!

Anyway...

I know it's out of fashion, and a trifle uncool...

Pad, that Nabby tune is really awesome isn't it!! I am sure The Boss has been taking a leaf or too outta his back catalogue, especially on his last album Magic. "Tonight Matthew, I am Ian Mcnabb!"

Camille "Cats and Dogs"

Trying to listen to her last CD 'Music Hole', but it does seem (as many of the critics found) an exercise in technique over content. Not that many great songs, but plenty of wacky vocal acrobatics. And mainly sung in English which is a disappointment too. The sentiments of the above song bring a wry smile though.

"Cats and dogs are not our friends
They just pretend
They just pretend
It's just emotions we invent
Like photographs we put on shelves"

The Smiths - Bigmouth strikes agian (soundcheck no vox) morrissey's lyrics and vocals and delivery obviously took a steer from the great bassline.

Bob the Builder - Children's programme signature theme tune, my twins love it as they love most programmes on Ceebeebies, which are very educational nowadays, which is nice. Anyway, this theme tune is memorable and stomps a bit like Slade or Wizzard.

My band used to cover "Friday Night Fever." Great tune, very funny. And wow, Berman's reason for dissolving the band is unique, to say the least.

You're dead right there Andrew, pretty mad...I thought he was bullsh1tting when I first read the post last weekend...

Who originally wrote/performed Friday Night Fever Rob? Great track, played it for my partner a few weeks ago, she understood.

No it's credited to Dillon/Mevis/Mycus on the album Rob.

Just googled it, it's from a guy called George Strait, album Strait Country.

Actually, reading the lyrics now out of their musical context, it's not all that funny. It's actually kind of earnest.

It is pretty earnest Rob, struck me as so anyway.

Never heard of George Strait so listened to a 30 second sample on Amazon...seems that guy Dillon wrote some good stuff for Strait. He must have the world record in pun-usage for his album titles.

Wow, how amazing. I would have assumed from his lyrics that David Berman came from an activist, caring family. Now I can see that is partly (or completely) a reaction to the awful person his father is. Good for him. Bet Ann Coulter loves Berman's father; her father was also a union-busting lawyer.

"Our lips are Sealed" - the Go-Gos. This is genuine, not a modern, glib post-ironic offering. I got home the other evening after a few drinks, and flipping the channels I came across one of those million best songs of the 80s cut and paste jobs on one of the music channels (places I rarely visit). I knew the Fun Boy Three version, could barely remember this one. Great video on Youtube too*. Those were the days.

*Not as good as Men Without Hats' Safety Dance!

James Dean Bradfield - To See A Friend In Tears

I first heard this Brel cover by Momus way back in 1986. A very beautiful song, executed very beautifully by both guys. I have a got of time for JDB, he's also one of the nicest pop stars I have met.
