Has anyone else seen today's Australian? Full page advertisement (page 9) for a new monthly magazine published by Schwartz, publishers of Quarterly Essay.... "Rock critic" is named as Robert Forster, in the first issue (now on sale) reviewing Antony and the Johnsons' record. There is a tantalising scrap of RF's review, likening Antony's voice to Bryan Ferry's croon: "It is a warm voice from ancient times, a truth-teller, honey-coated, with a vibrato trill that suggests Bryan Ferry at his absolute best." There's a website at www.themonthly.com.au, which is designed just as an easy method of subscribing. (For non Australian readers, the liberal intellectual monthly magazine market has been pretty skimpy for many years. The likes of the New Statesman, the New Yorker or even Time Out have no real analogues in Australia. There have been efforts over the years, most of which have folded after a year or two. This new effort will need to pull big advertisers soon. But the list of contributors (RF is not the only big name, in fact he's probably the smallest!) is heartening.) |

RF is in the latest Mojo talking about his love for the first Modern Lovers album. It's great that there's this link between two musicians and songwriters that I hold in the highest esteem. Any other Jonathan fans out there? |

Thanks for the tip-off Rob. I've bought The Monthly and look forward to reading it. Are you going to see Adelaide v Melbourne on Saturday? I'm traipsing up to Gosford to see the Sydney v Queensland/ Central Coast v Newcastle double header. |

Hopped down to the newsagents to buy the Monthly. Have read Forster's review (right next to it an art exhibit review by one of my old Deakin Uni lecturers, Justin Clemens) which is great. So was the article on BookScan and Andrew Denton's interviewing style. Could be a very good mag indeed. I can't for the life of me work out why Sophie Lee is on the cover though. |

You bet Pádraig. I'm taking my 10 year old niece and 6 year old nephew too!! Go United!! (Hard to say that, for a veteran of much disappointment with Manchester City). And Andy, Jonathan Richman is indeed great. Somewhat timeless. Saw him in Liverpool in 2003 and he was charming, it was like a gig in your own lounge room. Sang in Spanish half the time. |

Pádraig, Adelaide v Melbourne didn't manage much excitement. AU looked like a Sunday morning side, with much kicking to the sky (and passing to the teenage opponents). Who would have scored 7 or 8 if they had any idea of scoring!! But they were well marshalled. We, not. We had a great keeper tho'. Goals were never likely and we got God's help in the shootout. I guess it's just a weird preseason game. Unless we wake up, the Mariners will walk over us to the final. |
