Friggin' EMI and their copy control CDs! I tried to copy 'Oceans Apart' to my computer (not for any dodgy purposes, I just like having instant access to my music when I'm on my PC) and it didn't work. I know of people having massive problems with the copy control format...do you think the Go-Betweens would have any say in whether the CD is copy controlled, or is it blanket EMI policy? Personally, I think they should stick to the original CD format. In fact, they cannot legally call copy-controlled discs 'CDs' because they've modified the format so much that it's not the compact disc format anymore. I think they're just pissing off thousands of music fans for very small gains in preventing piracy; there is software out there than can get around the copy control software no problems. |

I had to try it in three different cd players before it worked. They openly admit it will not play in some cd players, so what is the point? Copy control does not stop piracy/copying anyway. I'm getting the vinyl. |

Stuart, it depends on which software you use to rip the CD. I had no problem doing so with iTunes software. In the past I have been able to do so with Real Player software, though it was more difficult. What I found with Real is that it would rip all bar the last track on a CD, but that it eventually ripped the last track too if you kept trying (and patted its back and called it a 'nice computer'). The only trouble was that the last track would not include the band's name in its ID tag. With Windows Media you will not be able to rip a protected CD. So if you are using that you will just need to get different software. Copy protection is very annoying though. I bought the CD - and several thousand other CDs, cassettes and records - so why should I not be able to make a copy onto an mp3 player or make mix CDs for myself? |

Another way to discourage the trend of copy protected CDs is just not to buy them. Obviously I bought Oceans Apart, but there have been several other EMI CDs in the last couple of years that I decided not to buy because they were copy protected. So EMI have lost money from me because of this (and I buy hundreds of CDs every year). The purchases I have foregone have been ones that were not essential to me but which I would have bought had they not been protected. And no, I did not subsequently download them from anywhere either, I just went without and bought some albums from other labels instead. |

Padraig wrote "I decided not to buy because they were copy protected. So EMI have lost money from me because of this (and I buy hundreds of CDs every year)." You appear to have an inflated sense of your own importance, I can't imagine EMI quaking in their shoes because of your posting. |

Yeah but think if nobody copied their music , they would have gotten rich and if they had gotten rich then they would be like the cure or the smiths or something , just flogging the same old dead horse. Robert and Grant have had to really push their art. Piracy Laws are just an excuse to fund colombian dictatorships courtesy of Elton Johns nose . |

fsh, you are a bothersome moron and your bravely annonymous quotes always bear that out. If you have nothing to contribute other than critisising a perfectly reasonable post I suggest you go to some pedantic, curmudgeon site and gripe away to your heart's content. Such a brave little annonymous soldier. Mummy must be so proud. |

fsh, I think it's fair comment of Padraig's. If he's doing it then it's a fair bet that lot's of other people are too - me included. It's got to be hurting EMI to some extent and in this age of iPods and mp3 players where people want to rip their CDs perfectly legally then it's a pretty stupid policy by EMI. |

Yeah, sorry about that Eke, it's just that some humorless posters (not mentioning any names - Padraig) make me irritable from time to time. One man's meat is another man's poison and all that. |

You might also want to try emusic.com and get a very low cost, high quality mp3 copy. |

Have any of you guys got Nokia phones with music player facility (this was a free upgrade feature I wasn't aware of until i got it home!). I used the dedicated software to rip the tracks to the hard disk in the supposedly superior (to mp3, compression wise) AAC format with no problems. Apart from This Night's For You, of course! |
