Hi
I was at the ATP concert yesterday in Sydney. Robert was in fine form starting 5 minutes early and saying to the 20 people there that we were lucky to get two songs no-one else was hearing inc. a wonderful Heart out to Tender. The crowd did increase in the warm Sydney afternoon to become a few hundred.
But the standout moment for me was when Lindy and Amanda Brown turned up and were standing next to me. I gave Lindy an in awe smile and she smiled back. She was very enthusiastic, yelling things out to Robert and singing along to most songs especially original GoBetweens songs like Head Full of Steam. It was a great gig, I got to sell Robert to two friends who hadn't seen him before, and I stood next to Gobees royalty. Luckily Nick Cave was also fantastic later in the night!

Saw Robert F, Spiritualised, The Saints, Nick Cave & Bad Seeds at All Tomorrow’s Parties, Venue River Stage Brisbane.

Robert came on about 4.15 pm and already a coupla hundred people gathered in front of stage. I kept outta the sun back up the hill in the shade, the mind’s still willing but the body needs preservation!

Robert was supposed to only do 45 mins but gave us a great 1 hr set. Opened with If It Rains and in the bright, dry summer sun it was a great choice. Pandanus only other Evangelist song (I’m struggling to remember). Did Surfing Magazines (always a crowd favourite it seems) German Farmhouse, Head Full of Steam. Here Comes A City, Darlinghurst Nights, great version of Heart Out To Tender and a still emotional Quiet Heart which seems to take on new meaning now that Robert sings it. Robert seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself as did the rest of the band. He received warm and appreciative applause at the end of the set. In the bright warm light of mid/late afternoon the sound seemed better than ever; exposed to the physical elements, I found myself more easily exposed to the musical elements.

Never heard of Spiritualised. UK space rock band sounded interesting but didn’t engage me, although young guy next to me had come just to hear them. Go figure!

The Saints came on about 7pm and the crowd down the front had suddenly swelled to a coupla thousand it seemed. I moved as close as I could to take in the wall of sound. It had been advertised that they were to play the I’m Stranded album but this was not the case. Bailey’s voice was clear and he still knows how to front a band, but Keupper’s guitar was raging and this was a full on assault. I unfortunately missed them at last year’s Pig City for comparison with sound. They didn’t play I’m Stranded which was rather surprising.

Nick Cave was extraordinary. A tad loud for these middle aged years I left the front and perched myself high up on the hill where sound was cystal clear. About 4 songs from Dig Lazurus sounded great live but the usual suspects got the crowd (4 or 5 thousand?) into a frenzy. Red Right Hand, Mercy Seat, Ship Song et al. Finished with a breath taking Stagger Lee. Is this band the best fkn rock band in the world?

At 11 pm we spilled out into the night.

Highlight for me?? Quiet Heart still played in my head as we walked to the train.

On the same site, news that Mick Harvey has quit the Bad Seeds, so that ATP will be his last gig with the band ? And a download of the RF performance.

Bad Seeds with no Mick Harvey is ike REM without Bill Berry. However, I thought they would miss Blixa, but they seemed to weather the storm. There are strong, upfront personalities who really embed themselves within the current Seeds and help steer the sound now though, such as Warren Ellis and Jim Sclavunos, so they'll probably manage OK.

I still don't get why The Saints Stranded is listed on the 2009 ATP bootleg, strange. Yes David i had read on there and somewhere else that they didn't do Stranded, I shall not rest until I find the truth, who can help? Obama!!?
