What a great set! But then, any set of their stuff would be a great set. I'm glad they did "Honeymoon Killers."

I don't recognize "Twenty Years Ago." What's that from?

How did they sound Kevin? Did Noko do a decent job? How committed was Devoto? Adamson? Who was the drummer?

Found this on a blog

"Just got back from the first London gig - will be there again for tomorrow

I'll confirm The Honeymoon Killers is indeed the second half of a medley - the first half is "The Great Beautician In The Sky"

Also there was an additional song tonight - in between "Rhythm Of Cruelty" and "This Poison" - they slotted in "I Want To Burn Again" - otherwise- same set, same order as Oxford

Bloody great gig! "

The newcomer arrives, possession and guilt on his face. Apologizes to the customs man for the gaping hole in his suitcase. He says I've seen what promises are made. I've seen how people are undone. It's all done man to man, one to one.

Brilliant. Howard Devoto is the person who taught me that song lyrics weren't always meant to be ignored. Other people remember stanzas of Tennyson. I remember stanzas of Devoto.

Manchester, so much.. you know the rest.

I really do think that Manchester, has a lot to answer for...

Manchester, Saturday 14th Feb 2009. Settle into B&B (a pub!), at 3pm with a pint of Fosters and a Guniness.

A few beers later, shite burger, we head off, the first pick up is Andreas, we find him outside the Student union. Head over the road, more ales, we chat about the board and everything. Its getting close. Enter Jon. We are now 4. We gas on, big laughs all round, this is fun. We head off, to what looks like a shitty pub, only to find its quite nice inside, we eneter, us four, we link up with another 3 and Mr Miles Hunt, who is grinning like a Cheshire cat (quite fitting), he's excited about the gig. We head off to the Academy. Its quite cold, very manchester, dark, grey, but there's a cheer in the air. We wait for Andreas, hes got to locate his tickets, Jon tells us to go in, and the pair will catch us inside, we eventually go inside, everyone is here, the whole of the Manc music scene, past and present, first up Martin from ACR, I think I frightened him! A whole host of Factoryites, too many to mention... you know, upon entering the room, I immediately knew, there was no way on God's Earth, I will see Andreas or Jon for the next couple of hours. Its a dark, dense, jam packed place, quite awesome, I lose everyone else. I end up down the front, perspiring in anticipation. The cheers are deafening. Throat and mouth is quite dry, we get chance to dry out, there's no way to get to the bar, the thin air. The lights come on and there they all are, Barry, John, Dave and heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Howard, in a big white suit jacket, bald, but exactly the same as he looked 32 years ago, he is a star, he's unique, he's a miracle. Everything is perfect. The whole set is played exactly as it should be. noko is a revelation. What a gutarist McGeogh was. 2 hours pass (you can find the set list if you blog) I'm in heaven. The lights coe on. no one can actually believe what they have seen. This is the best ever reformation, period. No sense of 'they're doing it for the money', none whatsoever! We say farewell to the charming Andreas, we sih him a safe journey, we head on...to the aftershow thing. John Doyle walks towards us, and we greet him, and congratulate him on the night of a night's, I turn to see Devoto. I head over. We talk, i am awe struck, but we chat quietly for a minute or so, he's very friendly and relaxed, a queue builds up behind me. Many cokes and tins later we head off and wish the charming Jon a safe trip too, it was good to meet you two! We head off back to our pub. thankyouforlettinmebemyselfagain, Howard.

Top one mate (see what I did there haha??!!), sounds like you had a whale of a time

Cant wait for tomorrow night now. Apparently the setlist in MCR was identical to the London gigs so cant see them changing it now, looks like its set in stone.

Manchester was great, nice to meet up with Spence & Andreas. The gig was amazing, with the audience being a who's who of Manchester music history. A fine set, but I'm not going to get into review mode Spence has summed the night up nicely.

A bit of a shame I had to drive, but time's are a little hard and a stop-over just wasn't practical. That's just to explain the cokes in Spence's review just incase people get the wrong idea of our rock 'n' roll antics.

Andreas is brilliant, a few thousand km's for a gig, and I don't bother going to London, an inspiration to us all.

Cheers
Jon

I went to the London show on Friday and it was an amazing gig. There was so much love in the audience for the band and the atmosphere was great. Adamson was a god with twin marshall stacks and a pulverising bass attack. Devoto brilliant, Formula and Doyle perfect but I actually thought Noko's Mcgeoch impression was too studied, in trying to replicate every little detail with same amps, pedals etc he lost some of the edge and feel. A small criticism as it was an incredible night and I agree with Spence that it must rank as one of the great reunions of all time.
The feeling of standing in a buzzing crowd listening to The Light Pours Out of Me with a huge grin on my face ranks very high in my all time musical moments list.
The Undertones was and is another great reunion and they still sound amazing live if anyone get's the chance to catch them.

Yes it is Pad, Cosmo, I have to disagree with Noko being too studied. For me, he helped make the night, I think there is nothing worse than seeing a different line up of a legendary band, where the latest addition takes the songs off to somewhere else, rather than recreating what we all know and love.I think it made complete sense playing the Yamaha etc, It must've been an extremely difficult job, to fill the great man's shoes for a string of dates, he's done it very admirabley IMHO! :-)

Back on the board after a very short night with a feeling that my boing is still circling over cologne because the airport was closed last night - still landed in cologne but that's why I came home around 2 a.m. this morning :-)

spence, you have summed up the night well, so I don't say so much about the concert. But I agree with you that Noko did a wonderful job and everybody in the audience got the thing he wanted most:
Magazine in perfect form and an almost original feel!

There was a discussion earlier on when some found that glenn did not a good job on robert's tour because grant is missing.
But I think this is the point. Magazine is still magazine tho John is missing. And Robert Forster and band is no more Go-Betweens because Grant is missing and glenn did a wonderful job (imho)!!
But no more discussions on that!
It was a great and wonderful night and not only the best concert this year for me (btw I have to say it's my first concert this year :-)) but also one of the best concerts ever!
On the other hand was it very special for me meeting with spence, jon and buzz! That made it even more special ! Thanks guys for everything, it was great meeting you and I hope we can meet more often! Even in cologne area for some good concert! Usually I wouldn't have missed the after show party but I imagined that this last night would last that looooong....
And two nights one after the other without or with very little sleep I cannot stand that easily nowadays :-)

As I said spence and jon, my home is always open for you guys! ...and cologne area is one of the best places for concerts because you can get tickets for almost every event that would be sold out in the u.k. within a minute :-)
And flights to cologne are short and (usually cheap).

Tonight I have to play table tennis with my team and I don't know how to stay awake.
I have to concentrate on every word I say or write - so sorry guys...will write more later this week!

Take care!

Spence - we will have to agree to disagree on this one. I wasnt suggesting he take 'the songs off to somewhere else' just that he aint no McGeoch, the edge and feel of McGeoch's playing were what I missed, but like I said it was a small criticism and Mr Noko is clearly a gifted guitarist

He wants to keep in touch with you two by the way, is it OK if I can supply your email addresses. Thanks for the reports, all. I can conclude that everyone involved in this gave it their best. The reason I'd worried a bit about Noko is because his own playing style tended to be a little to "sweet," too pretty-melodic, back when he and Howard were doing Luxuria. So the decision to adhere closely to McGeoch's sound was probably a good one. He IS the obvious choice for the job, though. The only time I ever saw Luxuria play live they did a number of Magazine songs, including "Light" of course.

Since it was such an artistic success I wonder if they'll consider doing some more shows.

Spence, we were about 10ft from the stage where the sound was muddy to say the least. But it was a small sacrifice because you could almost see the whites of their eyes. Besides, from the review by vinylvillain it sounds like the sound wasnt great at our gig anyway compared to Manchester. Devoto was great want he, he is a natural performer which kinda surprised me, dont know why. The setlist was the tried and trusted, although personally I would have ditched This Poison for Philidelphia or Back To Nature, or....
Speaking with my friend after the gig we both agreed that the songs from Real Life were performed the best, dunno if thats because theyre easier to play or just that the later songs have more intricate arrangements. The crowd lapped up every minute, mostly guys our own age and as Clare (my wife)pointed out there werent many girls there. By the way, the female from the support band is a dead spit for Clare(although maybe half her age haha), when she was duetting with Howard I had a quick double take to make sure she was still standing next to me.
How cool is Barry A - did he wear the black undertakers hat with shades and black waistcoat with bright red shirt - what a look, fantastic!!
Finally, I'm edging towards Cosmos take on Noko, but only if I'm being hypercritical - he had a huge act to follow so well done to him.

Kev, cool.
I think it would have made sense to have Back to nature in the set list wouyldn't it?. Esp given that thin Air was the intro piece, obviously a tribute in itself to JM, and BTN follows Thin Air on Secondhand.
Yes Devoto, seem to be supremely confident, it must've given him the jitters to play gigs of this audience size, but he, as you say, was very natural. When I met him, we had a nice little chat, and he was extremley charming, I had to kneel down to speak to him coz he was sitting down in one of these lounger type chairs, well, half lounger half seat, it was like i was whispering to him, it looked odd to me mate Baz and jon who commented that it looked like I was gratifying the man!! That made us chuckle. When i got up there was a massive line of people wanting to see him!! I thought Barry was freakin awesome, effortless bass playing, he is a REAL musician, 1000%, yes he had the top hat on. And he had that big effin bass for some songs, the one he had years ago, mind you, I think I saw him playing it a few years ago, solo at Jazz cafe.
