In Robert Christgau's '06 short tribute to Grant, written in typically know-it-all style, he casually asserts that Grant was survived by "an adult son".

However, I've never seen this mentioned anywhere else. Is this true? And, if it's a) not prying and b) known to anybody on this board, with whom? (Not that I assume it's anybody who is known to be a prominent player in the Go-Betweens' history.)

Grant's son was not mentioned at all in the Go-Betweens biography, and I think it's safe to assume that the story surrounding that was considered "off-limits," especially since Nichols does cover all sorts of other sordid details.

Fair enough -- this is a more than serviceable clarification. Thanks, Jeff.

I think that the son was mentioned (officially) first after Grant's passing. See the obituary at
http://www.go-betweens.org.uk/gwm.htm :
"He is survived by his mother Wendy, his sister Sally, his brother Lachlan, his son Nathan, girlfriend Emma, his bandmates Adele Pickvance and Glenn Thompson and lifetime musical colleague and friend Robert Forster."

Somewhere I have read the phrase "natural son", which (when it comes to royal persons) means that the child is concieved outside marriage, with a mistress or something (I thought I read it in Robert's A True Hipster, but I can't find it now). I have also read that Nathan was approx 20-21 when Grant died.

I think Grant did mention him in an interview. I can't find it on the Internet, but I remember Grant said his son lived on the Gold Coast and was into techno. I'm sure I couldn't have made that up, I must have read it somewhere!

Re: Jeff's comment, Grant asked me, told me really, not to contact his family. All I knew about his son was that he existed. Since he is now public knowledge I suppose if or when the GoBs book is updated, he can be mentioned, though I don't imagine there is any reason to do more than that.

Just for the sake of putting a cent or two in about it, that book is magnificent, Mr. Nichols, which I assume you've been told ad nauseum here before. I spent countless hours reading and re-reading in the throes of my 'tweens addiction.

David Nichols, nice to you around! I really hope the biography gets updated. As it stands, the 2nd edition is a wonderful read. But I think getting it through the Evangelist and the small, yet somehow triumphant tour that followed would be a great place to get a sense of closure on the Go-Betweens' story.

I've been hoping for a better closure end, and that would be for Robert, Lindy and Amanda to bury the hatchet and tour with Vickers, Glenn and Adele next year behind a 20th anniversary reissue of 1978-1990.

Michael, that sounds a bit like when Yes and Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford & Howe merged their competing Yes shows into the Union album and tour! I can't see it happening with The Go-Betweens.

Padraig, I just didn't want to leave out Glenn and Adele. However my main thought was for Robert, Lindy and Amanda to resolve the differences and get back together on the stage. A tour celebrating the 20th birthday of 1978-90 with Robert, Lindy, Vickers and Amanda would be fine by me.

I dimly remember that Yes tour. I stopped listening to Yes in the late 70's and never did buy anything after Close To The Edge. However I did pick up the remastered Drama cd a coiuple of years ago. It's the 1980 album without Anderson and with the two mainstays from The Buggles. It's very decent.
