The bass player from ELO. He lived near me in a place called Coseley in the heart of the black country. I used to see him around, his mum used to buy the newspapers from my dad who ran a newsagents. When they were massive in the 70's and I mean fu*in huge, he would completely stand out in the street, if he used to pop into the shop in gigantic flares and his trademark sparkly eyes and handlebar curly moustache, not dissimilar to that of the gay biker from the Village People, the kids would flock to see him, it was funny looking back. All I can say is that I loved ELO, and I guess Kelly was part of the reason I did, rightly or wrongly I think they were an important part of music around the time they wre successful, they wrote IMHO classic tunes, I remember reading a quote from James Dean Bradfield, saying he thought ELO were more important and better than The Beatles. This is the man who loved McCarthy, he has taste, I can't disagree with him now can I!? RIP fellow black country mate. |

Yeah, I heard about this. Very sad, indeed. ELO are definitely one of my guilty pleasures! Say what you will about Jeff Lynne, but the man can craft a catchy tune. |

ELO are a brilliant band and dont need to be a guilty pleasure Jeff - even in my younger post punk hipster days I always had a copy of New World Record which I never hid. When I saw Boogie Nights at the cinema on it's release and Livin' Thing played through the cinema speakers at the end I practically wept with joy at the sheer genius of it. A large number of my 'cool' musician friends have left my house after dinner and too much wine converted to the cause by Mr Blue Sky and Livin' Thing blasted at them in my kitchen. ELO are never mentioned in lists of great british bands and they should be - they are a better Beatles tribute than Oasis. RIP Kelly |

I think they are shit, and I'd be a hypocrite to change that stance just because some guy i've never even heard of is dead. anybody i knew back in the day who liked them also liked other bland shit, they were never even a guilty pleasure. put me in a room with a gun pointed at my head i'd still rather listen to ELO than The Beatles though ;-) |

I remember thinking ELO's Eldorado album was decent. I bought a vinyl copy of it and used to listen to it a lot back in mid 70's. I never felt the need to get any cd's by ELO though, so my tastes have changed somewhat. |

Ha! Kev dont pull your punches! Music is a great divider as well as a unifier, I myself have an almost pathological hatred of U2 and Coldplay. You are wrong about ELO though and I love the Beatles! |

Re: rightly or wrongly...I thought that was something like the case, spence, which is why I said what I did, because that's my particular hobbyhorse. Right and wrong don't apply, and no amount of "righteous" passion can change an opinion into a fact. And when I die if it turns out that there is something afterwards and they have some big cosmic toteboard of the greatest albums and groups ever and an attitude of "Nope, these are the greatest...if you loved something else, you were wrong," then I'm gonna call bullshit on the whole thing. |

That's a very touching tribute Kevin... I always associate ELO with listening to Radio Luxembourg under the covers on long wave. Last Train To London sounded awesome then and still does today. I bought a 2CD best of ELO last year and liked quite a few other songs on it too, but nothing as much as LTTL. |

its hard to have a tribute to somebody you've never heard of padraig. I cant stand the band, never have and I was commenting on other peoples comments about the music. |

I'm afraid I associate ELO with my younger sister blasting 'I Can't Get it Out of My Head" through the wall. Next up would be Supertramp or "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." |
