At least that was Grant's view of Robert's cock up and recovery during German Farmhouse. Really good set,neat and tidy rather than spectacular and felt very different to the Barbican show (CDs for sale at £10). Band played superbly, really tight sound. Not very good at remembering set lists but included were Finding You, To Reach Me (great to hear that again), Poison, The Clock, Draining the Pool(superb), Statue (poor but better once Grant put his marraccas away), Working Family (also poor), Darlinghurst Years (superb), Spring Rain, Cattle and Cane, magic in here, here comes a city, Streets of Your Town. Encores were: Mountains near Dellray, Boundary Rider, Too much of One Thing and then Surfing Magazines and Bye Bye Pride Really good night would have liked a bit more 16LL - why don't they play that stuff any more except for the over plated Streets of. Roll on Saturday - still got a spare ticket if anyone's interested! | ||

It was a great gig, a real treat to see them in a smallish venue...and to be able to get near the front. The highlights for me were Draining the Pool (awesome), Cattle & Cattle (obviously), Darlinghurst Years (becoming a real favourite)and To Reach Me (a personal favourite). But generally all tracks were strong, and the night was wonderful. I now wish I was free on Saturday to go to London to see them again. | ||

Fantastic gig last night - I think the best I have seen them since they reformed. Sound was good and the small venue meant my wife could see more than just Robert's arched eyebrows!. Loved To Reach Me - generally thought they seemed much more like a band than Robert and Grant + two others. Backing vocals on To Reach Me were brilliant. Glenn and Adele have mastered Cattle and Cane as well. Draining the Pool a highlight and the new songs sounded good, especially Darlinghurst and Finding You. Not sold out though - Are the people of Brighton and Hove mad? | ||

Never thought I'd ever hear...To Reach Me live - waited since 1989. They sounded so good last night and were as tight as I have ever seen them. Wonderful gig topped off by Robert signing my Live in London cd. | ||

Charlie, How can you say that The Statue and Born To A Family were poor? They were highlights for me! - I loved the 'marraccas in time with the drum machine' moment. I guess it's good that most fans seems to like different parts of the back catalogue and there aren't only one or two standout songs. Good on yer Stephen - how did you manage to get it signed? was it the old hang around outside the stage door after the gig? I was suprised at how young the audience was last night, totally different to the Barbican and the Astoria where at 27 I was made to feel like a youngster. Maybe it's a Brighton thing? Can anyone remeber when the band finally left the stage? I'm wondering if I missed a lot having to leave early? | ||

Matt - it is of course great that people perceive things differently. I did not have a problem with the marraccas per se it was just that Grant could n't seem to co-ordinate his mouth with the microphone while shaking them - kind of get the impression that he really needs to focus on the singing or his vocal performance goes astray. I do think The Statue is Grant's best song on OA though. I also really like Born to a Family but it just did n't seem to work last night - I'm no musician but I thought the timing was all over the place. They finished at 11 on the dot, and sadly the turn out was all too typical for Brighton - I've moaned for ages that bands do not play Brighton but you can hardly blame them with turn outs like that. Monday night doesn't help but clubbing/dance music remains far more popular than live music on the south coast. Finally Matt again a difference of perception, we left remarking how old we thought the audience was -maybe its like policemen eh?! | ||

I agree with C Gull on pretty much everything. Thought The Statue was great though, but that may have been Grant's performance . Born To A Family didn't work well nor Boundary Rider. Robert's attempts to play lead lines on Finding You and Streets were comical but his playing on Bye Bye Pride was brilliant. The sound of the band,especially on To Reach Me, Draining THe Pool For You and Darlinghurst Nights was fantastic. The audience was mostly us older types, with our wives, or so it seemed to me. I was very surprised at the low turnout. Recently The Wedding Present and The Kaiser Chiefs have sold out the same venue. We have The Magic Numbers there tomorrow and Teenage Fanclub next Monday. Will be interesting to see how many come along to them. BTW it's not just the Barbican cd on sale for £10 - they have the expanded first 3 lps as well, all £10. | ||

Forgive me if I sound like some sort of internet weirdo stalker (I'm not honest!) but given the number of Brighton and Hove based GBs fans on here over the last few days I was wondering whether we should meet up for a pint one evening? My wife seems to think she hears quite enough about the brilliance of Cattle and Cane etc and it would be good to meet some other obsessives. Sadly I'm not sure I know any GBs fans that haven't been forced into it by me. What do you think? Wedding Present were fantastic by the way and I love Take Fountain - best thing he's done for years, just a shame for Gedge he needs to be heartbroken to do his best stuff. | ||

Hamish - sounds good I'd be up for it -are you going to Teenage Fan Club on Monday aswell along with Stephen? If so we could meet up in the Barley Mow on St James Street beforehand - say 7:30 -there will be four of us probably have something to eat there -had a kangaroo steak before the GBs as it seemed appropriate! Stephen - sorry finally got rid of the ticket on Wednesday - should n't think its sold out though. Finally a question on the great marraccas debate. My wife reckons Grant gave up with them and switched to the guitar because it was n't working - was it all pre planned -views? | ||

I read somewhere that Gedge now lives in Brighton - and frequents the American Diner near Hove Lagoon, but it is a great new record. Did anyone go to see Herman Dune last week - what a cracking band. I thought the marraccas /guitar changeover was deliberate, and I thought it worked fairly well. I agree with what was said about the Liverpool gig - Grant did seem be to really enjoying himself, and the performance of his songs by the band was excellent. | ||

Charlie, Hamish - I can have a drink at 7.30ish on Monday. The American Diner would be better for me, just down the road. David Gedge must enjoy watching Grease on a massive plasma tv (who wouldn't). The marraccas was either deliberate or fantastically lucky to coincide with the acoustic guitar break. Did he do the same in Liverpool and Glasgow? Magic Numbers were excellent - venue packed with very young people. | ||

Charlie/Stephen - I can't make the Barley Mow tomorrow unfortunately and not going to Teenage Fanclub. Happy to meet up another time though if you want to suggest something. Enjoy the gig tomorrow. I can't imagine David Gedge in the American Diner although I thought he lived in Seattle now. |
