Very entertaining gig, decent turnout (300?). They sounded very together and the standouts were To Reach Me, Cattle and Cane, Spring Rain, Darlinghurst Nights, The Devil's Eye, Part Company, Dive For Your Memory, Bye Bye Pride. Adele, Grant, and Robert were all enjoying themselves, couldn't see Glenn. Highlight - bumping into Adele's dad in the toilets | ||

As they were not playing in Dublin, I flew over to Liverpool to see them and came back this am, up at 5 in Liverpool and into work by 9.15 in Dublin. I HAD to see them and also to pick up the double live CD. They were great, and warmed up as the show went on. Why did they not play in Ireland, we don’t know. The set had some additions to the Brighton show although the format was essentially the same. Devil's Eye, Part Company, (both acoustic - RF and GMcL only) Dive for your memory were the additions. The new material was wonderful live, the quality of the new material is outstanding and I, for one, believe they get better and better. I have seen them six times now (anorak, I know) and they are a great gig and I don’t think I am being biased about that thought. But why not play Ireland? Can anyone tell me that? (on an aside, I had to share a taxi on the trip from the hotel to the Airport this am, the bloke (nice guy) turned out to be the Pilot of the my Flight on Ryanscare back to Dublin) | ||

It was a great gig wasn't it? I've seen them 3 times now, the first time they were supporting Aztec Camera at Liverpool Royal Court in 85/86. I'd never heard of them until that night and they blew me and Aztec Camera away. Saw them again in Manchester for the Rachel Worth tour and they were excellent, thing that sticks in my mind from that gig was Robert doing 'danger in the past'. So last night was great and kind of different again. Robert stood centre stage and seemed more of the front man than the previous two gigs and it worked really well 'cus he's the main focal point really. Must admit when Grant did 'statues' (I think) he took the mic off the stand and tried to kind of play that front man role and it was the one moment were I cringed. All his songs sounded fantastic though and their were moments were he seemed thrilled with the way the band performed them. Robert Forster's funny. Those little guitar breaks and then a sly smile to the crowd as if to say "what do think eh"? Great hair as usual and a black suit but really dirty scuffed up shoes like a cool mad art teacher. By the end they were on fire and Robert in particular was going for the chequered flag. I never thought i'd be joining in to a sing song of 'surfing magazines' it was great. Adele was really into it and getting down but the drummer Glen who I've never seen before didnt seem that happy really. I dunno maybe its just me but he seemed to perk up on the newer material. I read somewhere on the message board something by Robert Vickers (another great haircut!) and he said the drums seemed a little more basic as the guitars were a bit more up front now.(i'm paraphrasing here) but I know what he meant cus as great as 'cattle & cane' was last night the drums werent as good as Lindy Morrisons, kind of more basic on the older tracks but a definate improvement when they played the new stuff. Thats my opinion anyway. Maybe Glens just a moody guy! Last night was wonderful. As some guy shouted out "I've got a baby sitter till 1 a.m just play everything you've got"! | ||

James, I wish I was there at the Liverpool gig myself. Talking of bumping into people, if I was there, I would have bumped into Lindy and Amanda and persuaded them to get up onstage for an encore the whole of the Go-Betweens would NEVER, EVER forget!!!!! | ||

It was a great night, and a great setlist (of course there's always going to be something you wanted them to play which they don't). The double CD's a good listen, do you think they could do a pearl jam and release all live shows.........aaaaarrgh, just a thought! Cheers Jon | ||

Brook. I made a GBs compilation for a friend and really loved listening to Lindy and Robert Vickers on tracks like Part Company, Spring Rain, Five Words, but then Darlinghurst Nights and Mrs Morgan went on too and the band sounded great in a diffrent way. So in the interest of goodwill and diplomacy I would like to say that i admire all the incarnations of the GBs without preference. | ||

I agree with you Jon, they should release all their live shows - especially as my attempt to record the Liverpool gig was a complete failure! Did anybody else record it? |
