There's a free mp3 of God Help The Girl's debut single when you sign up to the mailing list.

http://www.godhelpthegirl.com/

Basically it's B & S's Stuart Murdoch's latest project. Imagine if The Beautiful South had turned out decent & you're halfway there.

I think it's a Rita Tushingham pic on the site so that should please Smiths fans & lovers of kitchen sink drama's too.

Too bad TBS went downhill after 1992's very good 0898. I bought a couple of subsequent albums and the previous album, but they didn't impress me like 0898 did.

Agreed on 0898, disagreed on the slide. Though I like some more than others I don't think they've put out a bad album, all the way up to their retirement effort a few years ago.

B&S are f*cking shite. A crap band for overly sensitive people people with bland tastes. Anybody I knew back in the day who liked them also liked other bland shit. I hated them then and I hate them even more now. I'd rather be held captive in a malarial swamp, strapped down with bamboo shoots growing through my body, ripping slowly and painfully through my flesh, with Beatles records blaring louder than the loudspeakers used on Noriega, than be subjected to B&S.

Oh, wait!!! Sorry, about that! I seem to have been momentarily channeling Kevin/Skulldisco!

Actual Jeff response: Yeah, I like the first two albums, but feel that B&S fell off after Sinister and I haven't really been interested in what they've done since. But I have checked in periodically out of curiosity.

Is B&S on hiatus or something? Or is this just a quick, one-off side project of Murdoch's

Jeff,

your comment made me laugh out loud. Love B&S, particularly Tigermilk, If You're Feeling Sinister and Boy with the Arab Strap.

And I hate The Beautiful South with a passion.

And Jerry, thanks for the link.

Regarding B&S, I agree with the actual Jeff response except that I thought "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" was a short lived return to form of the first two albums.

Very funny Jeff!

I love B&S until I saw them live in Dublin and they were so utterly dredful. Stuart Murdoch was arguing with Isobelle Campbell on stage and broke up after the show.

I never bought another B&S CD after that, though I got sent a review copies of a couple more.

I haven't listened to them in many years. One day I will again and I hope I'll be blown away as I was with Jane's Addiction yesterday.

Hmmm. Is Kevin giving us the sh*t? Kevin . . . . Belle & Sebastian. Kevin . . . . Belle & Sebastian. Nope, I can't do it.

I'm more in the Jeff category. "Tigermilk" is a great record. After that, things taper down and then somewhere they got very good at imitating the old 60s classics and at that point I jump out of my seat and hop off at the next bus stop. I saw them at the Hollywood Bowl accompanied by the LA Philharmonic. It was a good show as those things go but Stuart Murdoch was super show-bizzy. I mean he was kissing hands.

I loved the Housemartins, as I hadn't heard any of the C86 bands at the time (some of whom I like much much better). They used vocal harmonies and harmonica, for crissakes! They did an acapella version of "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother." Can you be more stubbornly anti-cool than that? So I bought The Beautiful South's "Choke." Instant rejection.

This is a larf. I think the last 2 B&S LP's were a return to form. They seem to be able to chuck a lot of different styles in there & come up sounding fresh. There was a definite mid-period trough there though. Which could be put down to fatigue & releasing too much material. Those early E.P.'s also had a lot of bite, which they've replaced with quality B-sides on recent singles.

I only have Tigermilk which I hink is good and am content with that, no desire for any more really.

As for the Housemartins, they started to go downhill when Hugh Whittaker on drums left them and that ponce Dave something took over - basically after London 0 Hull 4 they started turning into The Beautiful South. I found The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death really disappointing. I collected their first eight 12"s and you can hear the slide after L0H4.

to this day i can't recite the full title of fold your hands... without choking on my embittered disappointment. i listened to sinister and the boy with the arab strap so much as a brooding student. then they put out that dross.

i can't believe they're still about, taking the piss. thankfully i'll always have electronic renaissance and those three sublime eps.

B&S were/are the epitome of pallid and fey, imo. Twee squared.

I never got into the Beautiful South. I had one album (possibly their first) but thought it was kind of bland. I like the first Housemartins album, but that's about it.

If by 'doing irony' you mean professing to hate 'bland' music when your stated tastes indicate the opposite, I think you've got us beat!

I didn't know that thing denoted a wink! I thought it was just a strange smile. Really. I'm not being ironic here.

Yes Padraig, it is a wink. One of the few keyboard tricks that I know, apparently there are loads!! Suppose that is the problem with message boards, if you are joking about something it doesnt always translate as clearly as when having a direct conversation.

Yes Joe, the new DM is pretty good early doors. To be honest, they've been improving each time since Ultra, which was a bit of a dirge.

Actually considering what Dave has been through, he scrubs up the best, but Jeez the other two, keep em outta the press shots, not that i care much, but if I were their press manager, bring out the airbrush!
