Jonathan
I don't know how many members are registered on this board. But how about 'officially' organising for a copy of the 2CD Barbican set to be made available exclusively to members of this board. As has been mentioned the GB's are not playing in Dublin, nor in a lot of other cities where registered members reside. It shouldn't take a huge amount of effort, and it's the least Southside Management could do for us loyal fools.

I'm presuming you don't mean a free copy... But yeah, it would be a good idea I reckon. Although I'll be going to one of the gigs personally. Anyway, I still think they'll play Dublin.

Your presumption is correct. I am not a shameless 'cad' looking for a free copy. I and I think anyone else on the board who wants a copy (and from other posings, there seems to be a few 'hands up') would be very happy to pay if copies were made available.

Can I second the plea for the Barbican CD to be made available via the messageboard? Or could some kind soul pick up an extra copy for me? I'm going to miss the Shepherds Bush gig...sigh...I'll gladly pay costs & postage...thanks in advance.

It doesn't take long for stuff to hit ebay these days. Check out item # 4728597207 and item # 4729588060. I hate to be a pain is the ass as you probably know, but members of this board shouldn't be reduced to bidding on ebay for this stuff!

I think many of us are very keen to buy a copy. It's going for £30 a time on eBay. I'd rather my money went straight to the band.

I'm new to to board but been a fan since 1987.
I would also be interested in the Barbican cd's since The Go-Betweens will not come to my country, Sweden during this tour.

The Live CD was totally sold out after the Birmingham gig last week. I was told it could be bought through the record company, but there is no info on the Lomax website. I have e-mailed them and am waiting for a response. Will let you know if I hear anything.
If you want to try e-mailing them as well, the address is:

Probably the same as sharing any copyrightable material on the web - illegal.

I think the GBS should make sure they have sufficient quantities for sale at their live gigs.

I'm travelling from Italy to Munich to see them, and I'll be pissed off if the live CD set is sold out at that gig!

Otherwise, perhaps their management would let the message board know if the CD set will be available by mail order after the tour?

That is my point exactly - there are many people who want this CD who will not be able to get it. The CDs might have sold out or they might not be able to get to a show. The situation is being exploited by non-fans earning money, and eventually this recording will end up on the net. Maybe the GBs could act first and upload it to this site and let people download it.

By the way - it has REALLY annoying gaps between most of the tracks. MP3 sourced?

Hey, the CD is really good! I got my copy today from a friend that went to the Edinburgh in-store gig. Apparently it was not actually on sale (as the appearance was in a record shop) but my friend specifically asked for it and a box was produced. RF looked like a 'dishevelled art teacher' and signed my copy. Although he was a little confused when my pal said that I was really disappointed not to be there; RF asked if it was 'cos I was working and my pal replied 'No, it's because he moved to France 2 years ago'

Probably the best recorded live album I have ever heard. If you had nothing else by the Go-B's this would be the one to get. Fantastic stuff - especially the early songs like This Girl/Black Girl and The Sound of Rain.

I just hope they're planning to bring an adequate supply over to the U.S. with them! Seeing them on the third-to-last gig on the tour makes me wonder if my odds of getting a copy are going to be slim.

My first posting to this site, though I’ve been a fan for years. First saw them live at Glastonbury in 1986 and saw then again last Friday in Rubigen (saw them a number of times in-between).

The Muehle Hunziken in Rubigen is a bizarre venue, a little old wooden “music hall” where you could have watched the band on stage from the third floor! The crêpes were great! It was easy to get right to the front, just in front of Grant. They were pretty quiet between songs but seemed to enjoy themselves. They were brilliant, right on top of their game, a performance to remember.

The Barbican CD was (back) on sale and of course I bought a copy. It is brilliant, absolutely brilliant! My favourites are the songs from Liberty Belle and Tallalah treated to the full string accompaniment. I even managed to ask Robert to sign the CD, top bloke!
Listened to it in the car all the way back to Geneva.

Saw them in Zurich the night before but sounds like the same gig in terms of getting good and close, the lack of chat between tunes and Robert signing in illegible style afterwards.

I also snapped up the live CD and it really is marvellous. What is especially amazing is how the old and new seem to follow one another seamlessly, you'd never think "Cattle and Cane" and "The Clock" for instance separate each other by 18 or so years. Brilliant stuff!

Word from the band's management is that there are still copies of the Barbican CD out on the road for sale at the gigs. Stock unsold at the end of the tour will be made available by mail order.

I picked up the live CD last night at the Mercury Lounge and it is a fantastic two hour performance. The string section on Disc 2 adds a wonderful perspective to many of the songs.

I think I read some negative comments about the sound/mix of the recording, but to my ears the full, rich, dry clarity suits the music perfectly.

[deep breath] However, the person responsible for screwing up the mastering and introducing those infernal 2-second gaps between tracks should get his coat and go back to driving a truck! It's not as bad as it would be with most live recordings. The majority of the songs end with a final clap and murmer from the audience and since there's very little ambient noise, the silence isn't noticeable (unless you're listening on headphones). Unfortunately, there are several tracks where the applause continued into the opening chords of the next song, so the gap is startling and disruptive. There are also a couple of songs where the opening chord got clipped a bit onto the previous track... the worst kind of audio interruption.

So, what better way to spend the 22-hour intermission between Friday's and Saturday's Go-Between shows than editing-out 52-seconds of silence from an otherwise superb live album?

Hi Guy,

I saw last night's show - fantastic! Also picked up the live CD, but hadn't noticed the gaps yet. What's wrong with the GBs production team? First the awful, definitely NOT intentional digital distortion on OA, and then the gaps on the live CD... these are very amateurish mistakes..

Well, the performance/mix on the live disc sounds pretty faithful to what I heard and loved last night - and that's the good news!

Has anyone gone to this actual concert? The CDs are great! I'm wondering if the sequence has been changed. It doesn't seem like the last few songs are in order for encore etc. I also noticed the sequence when the strings come in and there are songs in there without the string quartet on them in between. Did they sit there and wait for the next song or again is the setlist different than the cd tracklisting? Just curious.

Hi Matthias:

Yes, the string section would sit tight from time to time while the band played things that didn't need them. It's all the same for them; I'm sure the union scale was the same.

I do not remember the order of the show so completely as to be able to attest that the order of the songs is unchanged, but I think it IS unchanged. I know that the early songs are in the same order. I'm pretty sure that "In the Core of the Flame" was indeed the last song--it was such an unusual choice.

It was a wonderful show that I traveled a long way to see. I could not believe it when they started out as a three piece. I certainly mean absolutely no disrespect to Adele but I love Grant's unique guitar-like bass technique. I knew I was in for a hell of an experience when the show started with "The Sound of Rain." That would be the first of a number of personal favorites of mine, along with "Your Turn, My Turn," "This Girl, Black Girl," "The Wrong Road," "Love Goes On" and, for chrissake, the wonderful edgy "When People are Dead." The fact that I now have a CD record of that experience just caps it all. That's why I can't relate to the carping about gaps between the songs.

I've been surprised by how little the live CD has been discussed on the board, actually. It's wonderful and one could make a case that it, not 'Oceans Apart,' is the standout GoBs release of the year (albeit limited release). I wish I could have been there too, Randy--I love the three-piece lineup. I was surprised also by how much Glenn follows (or at least stays in the spirit of) Lindy's unique rhythms and fills, given that the later stuff (especially post-2000) tends to have fairly minimalist, straightforward drumming. Iit shows how integral her work was not just in keeping the beat, but constructing the song. "Hammer the Hammer" would be a very different song without Lindy's parts.

However, as great as the song selection at the Barbican show was, I will say that the band has gotten better live over the course of the 2005; "Here Comes a City" is massively improved (inevitable since it was new at the time), among many others. It's not that they weren't great at Barbican, it's just that they've gotten stronger and tighter from this year's touring. They hadn't played live in a long time before Barbican, right?

Also, unless I'm listening on good headphones in an otherwise quiet environment, the gaps betweens songs just sound like natural pauses where Robert isn't talking and the audience is done clapping. It sounded that way when I saw them live--there were some of those weird, awkward silences when the audience had stopped cheering and was too shy to call out requests or comments.

Most of all, it was great to go home with a souvenier with lots of extra tracks after the show I saw recently. I didn't want that show to end, so in a way it didn't have to.

the running order of the cd is in original concert order. yes the gaps suck. no, there is NO excuse for it.

In my opinion the recording is very sterile and brittle. It sounds like there were no mics in the audience, or for that matter, anywhere in the auditorium. It sounds like a straight sound-board recording. Which is fine for a bootleg, but not so good for an "official" release.

I respectfully disagree with William. I think it is a fine recording. One of their best. Since listening to several Dave Matthews Band live cds (which are presented on CD as if someone has just pressed Record at the beginning of the concert and Stop and the end) I really like this style because it makes the listener feel like he's actually at the show while listening. I wish more bands did it and I appreciate the go-betweens. Luka Bloom released a live CD recently and it is great but sounds too controlled. No talking in between songs, quick fades between tracks.

Sometimes it backfires like Duncan Sheik's live cd where he stops the song and tells the story about the video. Although, the story is funny once I don't need to keep hearing it and end up having to fast forward.

Anyway, I think the live from london cd is fantastic and although there are half a dozen songs I would replace with my favorites, I'm glad to have it to listen to it.

One other note: I can't believe Grant forgot the words during Right Here about "You look 35"! He recovered quickly but it makes me laugh everytime I hear it.

C Gull - you obviously weren't sitting behind the same loud-mouthed w**kers as me, there were 6 of them and the man and woman on either end of their party insisted on shouting 'hilarous' in jokes to each other throughout the show. However by the end we were all friends.

Mark, I received the following disappointing e.mail by Simbiotic Sales which run the Lomax online shop as I was also told at the Hamburg concert that the CD could be bought through the record company.

All the Go-Between CDs we sell are on the Lomax label. I'm afraid I know nothing of this release.

Best wishes,

There were quite a few of the Live In London CDs on hand at the Eumundi gig at $25 a pop. Nice to see that the Tag 5 label of Robert's still going stong.

Weird how they don't sell the 2CD versions of the first six albums and just sell copies of the single CD version from 'ears ago.

No copies of Send Me A Lullaby - must have all sold out!

They didn't have any of the t-shirts that were on sale in Europe, either.

Tonight was the first time I've ever heard people continuously for yell out 'Eight Pictures'. Turns out that one of the hecklers plays in a local band that does a cover of it. I wonder what their drum solo sounds like? Of course they didn't play anything from the first record and nothing from Tallulah, either.

Are there any copies of this circulating? Anywhere? They seem to have dried up on Ebay. I missed out last year and am still trying to get a copy. If anyone on the board has a spare I'd be more than willing to make a generous offer.
