Thank you to the band for a very fine concert ''on'' the River Clyde last night. The venue was the Renfrew Ferry, a floating club. Great sound system. First time I have seen 'em since 1988, after witnessing many, if not all, of their mid-80s shows in London. Never having been tempted by previous 21st century GoBs activity, I could not resist after reading the unanimous reviews of the new LP. On the long drive home - listening to OA which I think is indeed excellent and it's mastered bloody loud, which was a pleasant shock - I reflected that even if they had done no old (pre-2000) material it would still have been a great show. The newer stuff is so strong. Never heard Surfing Magazines before but loved it - very funny! I am tempted to believe this may be the strongest live line-up of the band yet, as Adele's backing vocals sure do add a lot and the more-orthodox drumming meshes so well. I cannot remember hearing a more perfect live version of Cattle And Cane. Beautifully weighted ''lead bass''... What goes around comes around.......now that their 80s fans are entrenched in jobs in the grown-up media as opposed to just contributing rave reviews to NME, the GoBs have never had so much radio airplay and national newspaper attention. It's a good look, as the young people say. And well overdue. PS: I do hope you got your houndstooth suit altered this morning, Robert..... |

Is this the same David Swift who used to write for the NME and be in the rather excellent Razorcuts? I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but i'm new to these boards. |

It was a fine show as always. I had followed all the post reformation shows and the bits in between. All of them worthy in one way or he other. Of the many things that are remarkable about the go betweens they could have picked another 200 songs and it will still have been a great show. Grant introduced the set with "its good to be back home" and later confirmed the previously assumed affinty with Glasgow and dedicated a song to Edwyn Collins , who as many of you may know is currently/recently seriously ill. "surfin magazine" is one of the RF recent songs that really work live more than on records. I havent counted through the set list but the glasgow show seemed quite RF dominated, he really took centre stage and GM played bass at the end. Good to see you on line again David, there where quite a few faces from dodgy eighties indie bands in the crowd on wednesday!!!! |

I thought Glasgow was a spirited show spoilt only (as on the last occasion they played here) by the awful acoustics on Renfrew Ferry and a rather strange choice of songs in respect of their more recent catalogue. I'm afraid I can't share other people's enthusiasm about German Farmhouse and Surfin Magazines which both sound like pedestrian cod rockers with tedious lyrics to me. Its a shame Robert did not play the beautiful He Lives My Life or When She Sang About Angels instead of these two. The songs of the new album were excellent and the live CD of their excellent concert in London last year at the Barbican is well worth getting hold of (the sound there is fantastic and the strings enhance the songs beautifully and it's only a tenner!). I wouldn't mind catching them somewhere else on this tour at a venue with better acoustics - all in all Glasgow was enjoyable but I hope next time they play here its at a better venue. |
