In a similar vein, I prefer the 8-track version of SMAL to the 11-track ("Eight Pictures" notwithstanding), and especially to the 12-track, "Your Turn My Turn" being one of the most sloppily tacked-on singles in the history of the LP. | ||

I prefer SMaL, and except for a few duds, I think it's a great album. Lindy's drums, in particular, sound awesome via creative use of room micing. But I feel SMaL could've been improved quite a bit by nixing "Arrow In a Bow," "8 Pictures," and "Midnight to Neon," and then replacing them with "Hope," "Serenade Sound," and "The Clowns Are In Town." Basically, chopping the more self-indulgently arty songs and replacing them with VQOtE's more melodic tracks. For the record, I really like "Your Turn, My Turn," and love the way it opens the record (although for some reason, I always play side 2 first because I love "Careless" so much). | ||

I'm of the firm belief that "One Thing Can Hold Us" sounds like an opener no matter when it plays, and that's probably what the band had in mind when they first sequenced the record. And I love "Midnight to Neon"! I'd replace that with the iffy "The Girls Have Moved" on your list (with the assumption that 8 Pictures still ends up on 1978-1990) and concur with the three VQOTE selections. It would've been nice to hear some of those songs done in SMAL sonics. | ||

I bought the 8 track LP first and loved it just the way it was. I naturally assumed that more is better, so I duly bought the 12 track when I saw it. I wasn't as enamoured of the extra tracks, but mainly felt the sequencing didn't flow as well. It's a very rough record really and you have to be in the mood for it, to see past the flaws (most obviously Grant straining to hit the highs in Hold Your Horses). These days I play the original order on the iPod, followed by YTMT and WW (great standalone single). I agree it's a shame the VQOTE tracks like Serenade Sound were never completed for it, though. Some beautiful melodies there. |
