What is your "classic Go-Betweens line-up"? A lot of people on this board and elsewhere refer to a classic line-up and I was just wondering who that entails. Mine would be Forster/McLennan/Morrison. |

I've always quite liked the Forster/Dylan one that lives occasionally in Robert's head. |

To revise a well-known phrase: The Go-Betweens are a state of mind rather than a line-up. And I'm really getting in to the current state of mind. Adele's harmonies are great on the new record. |

The 1986 line-up Robert Forster, Grant McClennan, Lindy Morrison, Robert Vickers and Amanda Brown! Somewhere along the line, and believe me, that's the way they should reform! |

My vote is whatever line up they had when they recorded "Hope" - that scandalously ignored, wonderful, wonderful pop track from the "very quick on the Eye" bootleg. I fact, it gets my vote for best pop song of all time. Should be covered in gold and sent to heaven from all of us down here. |

That would be my classic line-up, Michael. They recorded also recorded a demo of it during their stay in Scotland in 1980 and it sounds (more or less) the same as the one on Very Quick On the Eye, just with better drumming. It's a shame they didn't properly record the song as it would have fit well on side B of Send Me A Lullaby. It's one of my favourite Go-Betweens songs, too. |

Sorry fsh, I'll try not to wander off the point. All the incarnations of the GBs have produced great records so I'm not sure that I can pinpoint a 'classic' line-up. I'm inclined to say the Libert Belle version of the band, but I am also a fan of Glenn and Adele. So these two get my vote. |

fsh - James is probably referring to Brook Crowley continually pining for a reform of the full 80s line-up when it clearly has ZERO chance of ever happening. No harm in wanting Brook but come on, let it go! :-) |

Robert, Grant, Adele and Glenn, because this was the line up the first time I saw them play. |

Sentimentally, the 1986-87 line-up. That is THE classic line-up in my book. But, according to what I saw and heard last Saturday in London, using all rational criteria, the best, not the classic, has to be the current line-up. Seeing them live in the eighties you would not believe they could sound as good as they do now. Some other things might have been lost, I don't know, but they make a great noise. |

The best line up IMHO was the Spring Hill Fair Line up - Robert/Grant/Lindy/Robert V. When Amanda Brown came along I got sick of all that are they/aren't they stuff with her and Grant. She drove a stake through the heart of the band but she was very talented, I'll give her that. |

Sartorially, the "Spring Hill Fair" line up was not just the best GBs ensemble, but the best looking pop group in the world ... ever. Amanda Brown brought her lovely polka dots, and that's not to be sniffed at. As for the latest line up, it was wonderful to see Adele going the extra mile. Ankle boots with leopard skin uppers! Love it! If they could only find someone who knows how to wear a hat like Mr. Vickers ... |

Trevor is correct. Although I truly love everything about Amanda, the incessant violin heard in every live song was a bit much. I know she couldn't just stand there on stage, but the band should have mixed it up at this point by letting her sing backup or leave the stage. Listen to sets prior to 85' and you'll see what I mean... Grant/Robert/Lindy/Vickers is the way it should have been for eternity.... |

Yep, je suis d'accord. I think Amanda was prone to excess (even if she's a wonderful violinist), the version of 'running the risk of losing you' on the bonus disc 16LL re-issue is just awful and brings the worst excesses of the Waterboys 'raggle taggle gipsy oh' to mind. |

Amanda played oboe and acoustic guitar live as well though, didn't she? The oboe is what made them unique in my book. |

You're absolutely right, Michael. Amanda's also had hands in playing electric guitar, mandolin, keyboards and even bass (during her short association with Love Me, she tried the bass out for "Sticky", a huge favourite in their repetroire and did it darn well). A beautiful musician, a beutiful voice and.... a beautiful body!!!!! |
