Truly the end of an era. Pity he's not going to be around to stiffen the Democrats resolve in pushing for a public health option. |

Exactly, Mark. If Kennedy's death accomplishes anything, I hope it spurs some spontaneous spine-growing in the Democratic Party. Getting health insurance reform done is the only tribute befitting a career as important as Kennedy's. RIP, Ted. |

Rob, I'm with you regarding Kennedy's death bringing about a spine-growing for the Dems in the final push for a health care public option. I think it will also get the votes of both of the Maine US Republican Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and most if not all of the blue dog Dems if Senator Kennedy's name is attached to the bill. |

Never mind a lifetime dedicated to politics. The crummy Brit media are more interested in reporting Chappaquiddick, and the fact he had the temerity to be associated with Irish Republicanism. "The bounder mixed with those paddy terrorists dont you know". arseholes |

In Ireland he's extremely well regarded due to him pushing hard for Gerry Adams to get a US visa years ago. That really got the Peace Process going and we'll be forever grateful for that. I read some of the Guardian reader comments earlier today and the amount of anti-Irish contributions was a bit shocking. Mainly about him being an IRA supporter which is bollocks. It's ironic as the Thatcher government had plenty of dialogue with the IRA for years. Same old same old... RIP TK |

Don't forget that House Speaker Tip O'Neil and Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan worked with Ted Kennedy in promoting the Peace Process and renoucing violence. |

There's been a lot of talk today about Kennedy, natch, mainly replaying old speeches and praising him for his ability to reach across the aisle. But since our news has (sadly) become essentially content-free, there's been very little mention about what he actually accomplished. Here's a taste for them's who's interested: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/8 /26/772482/-Ted-Kennedys-Greatest-Accomp lishment:-He-Created-Americans |

Thanks for that link by the way Rob. It's a great story. I was reading on Slate earlier about all the bills Kennedy sponsored, co-sponsored and advocated for. What a great public servant he was. |

Nice column, Padraig. Thanks for posting. I'll have to check out the Slate article. |
