Please ignore this if it's been covered elsewhere on the site but I can't see anything apart from 'news' on the home page. So you might miss it if you come straight to the messageboard. There is an opportunity to name a major new bridge in Brisbane after The Go-Betweens. A number of options have been put to the public including the Go-Between Bridge. You can votes at www.namethatbridge.com I don't think the name with the most votes necessarily wins, but I reckon we could get a campaign going, spread the word, and get stacks of votes. BTW. This is my first post though I read the board regularly. First saw the GBs in 78/79 at Cloudland supporting Madness and The Sports. Then numerous times since. I work 50 metres from Ric's and used to see Grant in there all the time. Even had a haircut beside him in a daggy barber shop in the Valley Plaza. (Could have been an album cover). Be great to have a bridge named after them instead of some old politician. Spread the word. |

Brisbane's Hale St Link is named Go Between Bridge. http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story /0,23739,26139135-952,00.html BRISBANE'S Hale Street Link is now the Go Between Bridge with ratepayers voting to honour one of the city's most famous rock bands. Ratepayers overwhelmingly voted for the name from 11 short-listed suggestions. Robert Forster, who founded The Go-Betweens with the late Grant McLennan in 1978, was thrilled with the unexpected surprise and the tribute. "My thoughts are that bridges are romantic and poetic," Forster said yesterday. "If The Go-Betweens name is going to be lent to anything then I think a bridge is perfect." Just as rapt was longtime Go-Betweens fan Lord Mayor Campbell Newman. "The people have spoken and I think it's a fitting tribute to a band that helped put Brisbane's music industry on the map," Cr Newman said. |

Robert said it best. If they're gonna name something after the GBs, a bridge seems perfect. Very nice. |

Go on and admit it; you always wanted to see Robert in a orange fluorescent jacket and a protective workman's helmet (worn at a slightly jaunty angle maybe?) Interview about the bridge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDy6DYU2h nM |

Even Robert can't look good in fluoro! Like the jaunty helmet, though. |

The news makes the Guardian "It is a truth not universally acknowledged that the Go-Betweens are the greatest Australian band that ever lived. To know them was to love them. The only problem being that very few people actually got to know them." http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblo g/2009/oct/05/go-betweens-bridge |

I doubt if Robert will be chuffed to be told that he looks like a TV aeriel repair man however. The journalist must be used to a rather dandy sort of handyman round his way. |

Though Lou R. often is grumpy and thoroughly nasty, I think the septic tank line was a bit much. Some of the comments below the story are pretty darn funny. Jimi Hendrix finally got a park named after him up in Seattle after nearly 40 years...the city resistance to it (and even to something as simple as the life-size, street-level statue that's been up since 1997) has been almost wholly based on the fact that he used drugs. Unbelievable...or rather, quite believable. |

Love the following response: 50 Cent had a coin named after him. It's also slang for talentless misogynist moron with all the charm of a mars bar that's been left in the sun for too long. |

I did cast a vote. I'm quite happy to have participated in this, in a small way. Now I wanna visit the bridge! On the other side: Edwyn Collins named a song Bridge, but will probably not have one named after his band Orange Juice: I burnt every bridge that spanned the water just for you Now I'll never reach the other side, oh what am I to do? |

In his heart of hearts I wonder what Robert thinks of this. He's far too disciplined and good-natured to reveal it if he is not enthusiastic. When they start naming things after you it usually means you're dead. Or nearly so. |

Grant is dead. And so are the Go-Betweens in a manner of speaking. |

The Go-B's are alive in their music & of course the bridge. (even though it pales in comparison to the one from In The Core Of A Flame) It's better than a park bench tribute. |

This particular bridge will take a lot of traffic across the river thru the West End area. Resaurants, cafes, bars, book shops abound. It is also a huge multicultural place. Now thanks to the bridge, thousands of cars will spew thru this area changing the nature of the place. Not sure if Grant (who never had a drivers license) would want his name associated with this structure. Just a thought. |

To Jerry Clark: I agree with you. I was directing my comment at Randy Adams, simply trying to point out that the bridge is a tribute to the GB'S and Grant. We all know Grant is dead and the GB'S are, if we are to belive Robert, finished. Of course they live on in their music etc. Randy is the one who said " When they start naming things after you it usually means you're dead. Or nearly so." I was merely pointing out the obvious. |

I'm glad that Brisbane is naming a bridge as a tribute ti the Gobs. Living a couple of towns (and 10 minutes drive) north of Pontiac, Michigan; I would love to see three streets named after jazz greats Hank Jones, Elvin Jones and Thad Jones. All three grew up in Pontiac and Thad and Elvin were born there as well. Hank died last weekend at the age of 91. |

Why is it called the 'go-between' bridge? That's more of a pun on the band's name than honouring it. Anyway, it will be a disaster of a bridge - nobody will use it. |

Agree fsh. Can't understand why its not go-betweens with an s. Cant understand why Robert would agree to this without the "s" What this city does not need is another fkn bridge spewing cars thru West End. Get rid of cars from the centre. Many people are/were opposed to the construction of this bridge, and when the spelling isnt even correct I cant see the point of supporting it. |

Lovely to see both old and new members linking arms as they cross the bridge. Grant I know is smiling. |
