Huge duststorm blew into Sydney overnight. Woke up to a red dawn. Visibility down to about 50 meters. Red dust over everything - cars, roofs and roads all covered in it. Airport closed, ferries cancelled. Never seen anything like it. Will be like this for most of the day apparently. Caused by gale force north westerlies blowing in from the rural NSW picking up the dust after 12 years of drought. So looks like climate change is partly to blame... |

When I was picking grapes near Mildura in the 1980s ('working holiday') we had a dust storm which lasted for a day. It was quite an incredible sight; we were stuck inside our (metal) farm buildings with the noise of the storm being amplified. If you went outside it was like having your skin being sandpapered. |

If it rains will you get red rain? I never heard this version of Red Rain with PG, Natalie Merchant and Michael Stipe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2cdP14Id yw&feature=related |

Well it sort of did already Michael. We'd had a bit of a downpour after sunset before the Mars morning, but on getting up that morning, there were definite splotches that indicated that it indeed had rained red. |
