Some nitwit called Amir Nezar had written the first really negative review of OA I've read so far on: http://www.cokemachineglow.com/reviews/go_oceans2005.html Reading the review I have to ask if he is listening to the same album as I am (particularly when I look at the bizarre tracklisting listed next to the review which bears no relation to OA -unless the GB's have issued some French-only edition that I am not aware of!!). | ||

I am sure the reviewer actually listened to the record. After all, he correctly quotes a line from "Boundary Rider." All this review serves to demonstrate is that the GoBees aren't for everybody. My impression is that Amir Nezar likes things with "edge." You know, the stuff we all outgrew. What makes the GoBees work for me is fairly ineffable and I suspect that is true for a lot of us on here. For me, the Go Betweens are wonderfully free of fakery and posing, except when Robert does it blatantly, winking at us all the time. Sometimes, their songs are making a "statement," but most of the time they are not; they are miniatures, little stories which, as so often occurs, yield up more truth than big pompous productions. They are snapshots, flash cards. I don't think Mr. Nezar has any use for that. I've made too many jokes in my life that other folks didn't appreciate. It does not bother me that others don't get the Go Betweens. | ||

I checked the actual review and the homepage. Mr Nezar has Not even got the tracks right. They are from an album by some french band, Siberia(?). Pity the man...he probably thinks that the Beatles are overrated too. | ||

Yep - Mr Nezer sure likes things with edge. I was looking at his profile on cokemachineglow and he lists among his favourite albums Abraxas by Santana ("I've never made love with this CD in the background, but it would be the best CD to make love to, period") and Led Zep IV ("I don't care how many times Stairway to Heaven is overplayed"). Nothing wrong with those choices, per se, but he ain't living on the edge. | ||

I'm not averse to someone not having the same taste, but there's one thing I find odd - his aversion to an album coming in at under 40 minutes. Would that there were more. Who wants endless filler just because CDs can take 80 minutes? | ||

Good work, Mark! I didn't think of checking his profile. It never occurred to me he wanted arena rock but the hint was in his complaint about the limited number of notes played. Letting him review "Ocean's Apart" is a lot like letting me review Led Zep IV. Anybody want to evaluate the lyrical content of Santana's "Abraxas"--that product of the era when musicians without songwriting ability ruled the roost? And, come to think of it, I still love the Fall, Moodists, Stooges and Magazine, so maybe the comment about outgrowing edge was offbase anyway. | ||
