I agree Padraig. I saw them in Bisbane about the same time. Brilliant.

This is one of those threads where I just wanted to type one word, but that's not allowed. The one word:

Sigh.

It seems to be a rare event but I've never heard the Apartments... During the week of their (not so near from me) concerts in France I go to see Wilco, Grizzli Bear, And Also the Trees and a jazz concert. Must take care of my health...
But I'll try to find their records.

Thanks for the info Pádraig !

Was Mr Wilsteed on bass when you saw them ?

I had already seen the tour dates, as a member of this board was holidaying in our corner of France and passed me a couple of Apartments CD to listen to. "A Life Full of Farewells" is excellent. At the time I did a bit of digging on the net for more info on them; apparently it is the not the first time that dates have been setup in France that do not actually happen... (don't book those plane tickets quite yet Randy!)

Clermont Ferrand is about 5 hours away AND it is a school night, but havent't totally written it off as an impossibility yet. Heard good things about that venue too.

And who knows the whole story behind Peter Walsh's brief sejour with the G-Bs and 'Don't Let Him Come Back' ? Was he that awful to work with ?

Mr Wilsteed was indeed on bass Andrew, and Lindy and Amanda were in the audience!

The Apartments opened Pig City at the July 2007 Queensland Music Festival. Yes they were brilliant. At that concert it was John Wilsteed on bass and Robert and Lindy were in the audience.

By weird coincidence Peter Walsh was sitting in the seat two down from me at Robert Forster's show at the Sydney Opera House last year. I thanked him for his music and told him Apart was one of my favourite albums. He said other people had described this as his Trans!

..Padraig..this may have been noted previously, however with Amanda and Lindy's band 'Rainy Season', do you think it was taken from the line in 'Finding You'..OA

I'm pretty sure Rainy Season the band predates OA Charles!

as a relative newcomer to the apartments (thanks randy!) i'd be curious to know how everybody else rates them, and their albums in the grand scheme of aus rock.
i'm on record here as not being the biggest fan of aus bands but the apartments seem a bit out on a limb to me, and that attracted me.

i have recently acquired "the evening visits...", and "a life full of farewells"

I really like "Drift".
The thing about the Apartments in Australia is, like the Moles, they are virtually unknown. Go-Between fans here MIGHT know something but when I mention them to most people who knew "what was happening back in the day", most will say "who?".
I guess overt melancholy and introspection were never something most Australian warmed to - unlike the Brits that seem to thrive on that stuff.

I quite like "The Evening Visits," but only a scattered selection of songs from all the albums that followed. But those songs I like are really good!

And I belatedly get my answer to the origins of "Don't Let Him Come back" in this interview with Walsh (in French)...just "affectionate irony" ? He speaks with great affection for McLennan and Forster and remarks how un-worldly and inexperienced they were when he first knew them.

http://www.blogotheque.net/En-verite-je- n-ai-jamais-manque-de

And he hopes to come back next year to France. And there are new songs to record.

You know, about 14 years ago I could've read and understood a good deal of that article. Sigh...
