Uncut are first off the mark and have just published their top 50 Highlights (or not, depending on your viewpoint :-) ) are Animal Collective at No 1, Super Furry Animals at No 2, Dirty Projectors at No3, Bob Dylan at No 4 and Spences faves Wild Beasts at No5. Wilco are at 7, Flaming Lips at 14 and Sonic Youth at 19. No's 50-21 are shockingly poor and are full of unremarkable albums by artists whose best years are either behind them, or by new artists whose best years are hopefully not even in front of them!! for the record i think the top 3 are amongst the years best in what just might be the worst year for "popular music" ever. |

animal collective at no1 in mojo as well. i think this one is a no brainer to be honest. what is the criteria for album of the year in the rock press? i would say first of all most of the songs have to be good/excellent, thats a given. secondly, it should sound fresh, current, not too retro (although thats not unforgivable). thirdly, an album shouldnt be age restrictive, teens and middle age fans can all love the record. fourthly, the artist hopefully is not treading water, and has made an album that is not just another rehash of their trademark sound, but is still uniquely them. I cant think of any other band the rock press would consider for album of the year, animal collective meets all these hands down. i havent thought too long and hard about my list yet, but of what i listen to in the rock field, animal collective will be high up on it. |

The Low Anthem one was pretty good but all the Tom Waits like songs...what was that all about???? Really like Sara Blasko but I've only had it a short time. Her singing sort of reminds me of early Portishead. Some of the songs are really strong. Talking about songs, song of the year for me was Happenstance by the Church (totally classic Church)but the rest of the album is pretty sludgy. I did eventually get into the Doves one but it isn't as defined as either of their first 2 and I couldn't honestly say it's a truly GREAT album. |

Geoff, know what you mean re Doves album. I don;t actually think for me anyway, great albums exist anymore, they seem to be extremely rare animals, apart from Wild Beasts! |

You know that album never really "stuck" with me David. I hope the Crowdies one in January is much better. |

I never heard much buzz about the second Sweet-Hoffs covers album like the first one had. I've got the first and liked it somewhat. I would love to see a remastered Bangles - All Over The Place with bonus tracks and the 1982 ep. I haven't bought that many new 2009 released albums this year due to catching up on many missed 2000-08 discs that have appeared on various "best of the decade" lists. Neko Case's Middle Cyclone and Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3's Goodnight Oslo have both been listened to many times though. |
