Was listening to Dave Fanning (Irish DJ) last week- interview with Robert(?)Proper Sheppard of a band called Sophia. He (Fanning) likened their sound to that of the GBs. Anyone heard of Sophia? What do you think of them?

You can download a Sophia song from www.cityslang.com and judge for yourself. Fanning interviewed Robert Forster one time and only played Grant's GBs songs. You could tell Robert was cringing. I interviewed Robert the next morning for Anna Livia radio and got to sit in while he recorded two songs for No Disco to an audience of me, Donal Dineen, a cameraman and a sound man. These are all Dublin references to anyone who is confused here!

Hi there
I went to see Sophia in Whelans last fri - it was the loudest gig I have been to in ages - wasn't expecting it to be so extreme (even though I knew RobinP-S had been in The God Machine) as the lastest album is more downbeat and sombre..the download mentioned by Padraig wouldn't be that representative of the album ('People Are Like Seasons') - its a bit patchy, however, there are a couple of songs on it that are v.good - piano infused mini-epics that build brilliantly.

Talking of Dave Fanning, I was watching the Meteor(?) awards on tv recently and he won a achievement award - during the video clips of his career, there was one where he can be seen holding a Before Hollywood LP.

I remember the Fanning interview with Robert - a night or so before he played in the Mean Fiddler on the Warm Nights tour.

Dave gave a breathtaking display of unprofessionalism the same night; admitted that he hadn't bothered listening to either 'Warm Nights' or 'I had a New York Girlfriend'. Finished the interview with 'Bachelor Kisses' ("THE GREATEST ROCK OR WHATEVER-YOU-WANT-TO-CALL-IT SONG THAT I HAVE HEARD IN TWENTY YEARS" according to Dave) which he introduced by claiming that Robert was jealous because he hadn't written it himself.

Pretty hilarious stuff. I've often wondered what Robert made of this carry on.

I just saw Sophia at the All Tommorrows Parties festival. They didn't sound at all like the Go-Betwens to me. And yes, as Arcade says, very very loud. The loudest band there.

Caught the last 15 minutes of Sophia at All Tomorrows Parties. I didn't hear anything suggesting the Go-Betweens either, but then I missed the earlier, quieter part of their set. The last few minutes were, as pups says, very very loud and a little like Crazy Horse at their hardest.

Sophia are excellent - will see them tomorrow. Again can't see any Go-betweens feel at all - indeed i wish the gobetweens could bring some of the emotion to their current songs that Sophia do in tracks like "I left you".

Those that went to ATP - did you enjoy the Tindersticks? My faves - just wonder how they went down

Tindersticks were great. They were the last band of the weekend, which was a nice way to end it. They played a lot of old songs, a lot of stuff from the second album.
