I've always loved the song "The River People", both on Robert's album and the (I think even better) version by The Walkabouts, but I've never quite worked out what the song is trying to say.

There's lots of interesting images in there, but I've never managed to coalesce it into any sort of coherent whole. Am I missing something obvious about it? Is it about something in particular? Anyone know – or have ideas?

Can anyone who attended Robert's recent shows remember what he said about this song ? I've always been curious about this song also..

People who live in little huts by rivers tend in my experience to be a bit insular, a bit odd and maybe have a very simple existence. I think this song empathises with them! That`s just my opinion mind you!

Interesting observation fsh about the insular existence near a river.

Again, just my opinion, but in some cities (Brisbane included) some people reside in luxury units overlooking the river whilst other people spend their nights under the river's bridges for protection and keeping warm under bits of clothing and newspaper.
