Hi,

I wanted to pass on some info after I saw some people discussing The Clarke Sisters on the general thread.

I used to live in West Princes Street in Glasgow where I sometimes delivered stuff to a counterculture bookshop, Changes, at the end of the street near Kelvinbridge underground station.

When I went to see the Go Betweens in Govan Town Hall (sometime around 1990 - I'm useless with dates) Robert introduced The Clarke Sisters with "this song's about friends of ours from West Princes Street."

I was totally chuffed, since I'd always pictured the shop when I heard the song and it turned out that some folk from the other side of the World had written a song about it (or people involved in it), right enough.

Changes was the only place in the whole street that could fit "feminist bookstore" since there was just a barber's next door, a couple of showrooms. The other end of the street was a restaurant and, apart from a place that made dentures and the HQ for Scottish Ballet the rest was all just flats (including the home of Postcard Records.)

Thought I'd pass this on as it might interest some fans.

For what it's worth,

john

Thanks for the story. Are you the Jonny I know through Barry G?

The gig you refer to was on May 15, 1989 by the way. They broke up at the end of that year and didn't play Glasgow again until 1997.

Thanks Padraig, wonder if that was among the last things MayFest did.
Don't know a Barry G, that I remember.

To Jonny Mumbles and/or Padraig Collins:

Hi, I'm a fan of the Go Betweens as well (not that they have played the Philippines that I know of--possibly an intimate venue gig that nobody told me about--anyhow......I'm writing a series of stories about three sisters (witch/wiccan/occultist types) and wanted to name them the Clarke Sisters as a tribute to the song. I found this thread searching the Net for "the names of the Clarke Sisters" and this is probably as close as I'm going to get to finding out their real names. Does either of you happen to know their names? It would be great if I could use variants of their names for the characters in my stories. I'm crossing my fingers you guys still monitor this thread. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

DGN
