The Go-Betweens : Bright Yellow Bright Orange : Revolver Review

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

The Go-Betweens, Bright Yellow Bright Orange
Trifekta

So here we are in 2003 and Grant McLennan, 45, and Robert Forster, 46 on June 29, last week released their eighth studio album as The Go-Betweens. Is it any good? Of course, it is. It's McLennan and Forster - two of the greatest songwriters of all-time. This, oh this, is a truly smashing disc: 39m 03s, 10 songs, and every one a cracker, not a duff note or lyric in sight. How could anybody possibly resist the opening - and utterly poignant - pop beauty of "Caroline and I", a song that seems to musically sum up three decades of pop in just under four minutes. So I was listening to Bright Yellow Bright Orange on a train loaded with commuters the other morning, and as they glumly stared into space or their laps, we passed over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The view, the Opera House, this city and The Go-Betweens: it made me smile. How much more perfect can life get. The Go-Between revival continues, 25 years on. Thank heavens.
