I've always considered him a fraud. Writing songs that seem like they're saying something or are heartfelt just happens to be something that comes really easy for him. I'm sure he can write 10 songs that seem sincere before breakfast every morning. It doesn't mean they are sincere. In a way, he's not that different than Stephin Merritt, but Merritt doesn't try to pass himself off as some sort of hard-living, tortured artist/troubadour. Merritt also has the sense not to release EVERY song he's ever written (also known as Robert Pollard Disease). | ||

Kurt, its a flip of the coin between RA and RP about who is the most guilty of releasing everything they do. RA's Heartbreaker is fantastic and there must be a great Whiskeytown compilation awaiting release someday (the albums were too patchy). I felt like I was in a minority of one when I was massively disappointed by Gold. I reckon if he had ditched the Rock n Roll album, and just released one album made up of the best tracks from the 3 albums he released last year, he would be back on track again. RP has not made a good album this millenium, and I say that as a massive fan of what he produced in the 90s. | ||

I read this quote by Paul Westerberg where he said that when he listens to a singer he can always tell if they really mean what they're singing and how, for him, that was the most important aspect. And I agree, and that's exactly what's wrong with RA. He has no more attachment to what he's singing than whatever cutesy little wristband he picked out to wear that morning. It is too facile. I have tried really hard to like him, but none of his solo albums have clicked for me, for long. The only thing he's done of lasting value has been the CD "Stranger's Almanac", by Whiskeytown... And Kurt has it exactly right. Merritt's stuff might seem tossed off, there might be tons of irony and wise-assness at play, but there's also tons of real emotion in those songs - there's blood on those tracks. Once again, I have to laud the GBs, who didn't release every song they barfed up, who honed things and kept it to 10 really great songs per album. I think this quality could probably be summed up as discipline. The knob who's putting out the dumbass quasi-rap music and other bilgewater is the real RA. | ||

Never liked Ryan Adams, definitely a self-made "Legend". Too an extent it's understandable what he's doing. If everything he's recorded is available no-one will be able to drop any bombshell's by sticking them on an album. Lou Reed has said in the past you should destroy anything you don't release. If you fart in the studio it'll end up as an extra on a boxset. | ||

Ah, it's good to bask in the Ryan Adams hate. I've loathed him ever since I read an interview with him years ago where he was touting the punk rock songs he had just written, and the band he was going to record them with were called something like "Fuck You." Wow, that's really original and clever...and SOOO punk. Think how much better punk would have been if the Sex Pistols had thought of something like that back in '76. (I'm being sarcastic, Ryan.) Serves him right that people holler out "Bryan Adams" at him. They're equally phony if you ask me. | ||

I'd take Bryan Adams over Ryan Adams any day of the week. And I bet Bryan Adams would totally win in a fight too. |
