Loved the first album. Still have it and will stick it on the turntable tonight. Never saw him live either, but had bought tickets for a gig at the Apollo in Glasgow ('78 ?) that was cancelled unfortunately. | ||

I saw him live a few times, always because he was playing with other people I wanted to see – Bob Dylan, the Replacements and a couple others I can't remember now. And you know what? In each case, he blew them away (yeah, even the Replacements). Petty's always been like U2 for me, someone I admired and respected but never really loved. But unlike U2, who these days I find about as engaging live as Cirque de Soleil, Petty put on a real rock and roll show, with bass, guitars and drums. And god knows he has the songs, tons of them, even more than you think you remember. I feel bad about this, in part because he was an inescapable player in the soundtrack of my youth, and a good one considering the dreck that was on the radio. Apparently he'd just finished up some big tour that was supposed to be the last of its size and scope. |
