Seems like we are doing RIP threads with increasing regularity. I never saw him live, but I wish I had.

Maybe I'll see him yet. Not dead, it seems.

Loved the first album. Still have it and will stick it on the turntable tonight.

Never saw him live either, but had bought tickets for a gig at the Apollo in Glasgow ('78 ?) that was cancelled unfortunately.

I saw him live a few times, always because he was playing with other people I wanted to see – Bob Dylan, the Replacements and a couple others I can't remember now. And you know what? In each case, he blew them away (yeah, even the Replacements). Petty's always been like U2 for me, someone I admired and respected but never really loved. But unlike U2, who these days I find about as engaging live as Cirque de Soleil, Petty put on a real rock and roll show, with bass, guitars and drums. And god knows he has the songs, tons of them, even more than you think you remember. I feel bad about this, in part because he was an inescapable player in the soundtrack of my youth, and a good one considering the dreck that was on the radio. Apparently he'd just finished up some big tour that was supposed to be the last of its size and scope.
